  • trying out stitch fix

Have you heard of Stitch Fix? I’m kind of in love with it. You fill out a comprehensive style profile, then a stylist picks out five items of clothing/accessories for you. You get to try them on in the comfort of your own home, in good lighting with the clothes you already have. In three days you send back what you don’t want and keep the rest. There is a $20 styling fee that goes toward any final purchase.

I decided to try it because I recently got rid of a ton of clothes and I’m looking to kick up my wardrobe a notch. Since I wear scrubs during the week I rarely go clothes shopping for myself and am a huge underspender in this area. So here’s what came in my first box, but keep in mind that this is not styled at all. :)

    dresses

I asked for summer shirts and dresses so I was happy that they followed through on that. I kept this first black dress; it looks better in real life than in this photo. It was light and so comfortable and I loved that it accentuated my waist (might be hard to tell but there is a top tier to it) while still being flowy. I wore it to church with a tan cardigan and felt great.

The second dress was the opposite as it looks a lot better in this photo than it did in person. I love the stripes but the fabric was thick and hot (not good for summer at all) and it hung straight through the waist while hugging my hips. It was too short for me to wear comfortably on its own but felt a little long to wear with jeans. It was more of a fall dress and I didn’t feel good in it so I sent it back.

    wrap sweater

This was a wrap sweater thing that had an interesting back. It fit me pretty well but since it was short and sheer I’d have to layer it and I feel like I’d be forcing myself to wear it so I sent it back.

    shirt and bracelet

I loved this gingham shirt with chambray trim. It is light, comfortable, fit great, is well made and interesting. It was more than I usually pay for a shirt but I already got a compliment on it from a stranger (and that never happens to me) so I feel good about the purchase.

I was happy that they also sent me a piece of jewelry because I really want to expand on accessories. I kept this aqua leather/gold chain bracelet because it was fun.

So after I made my purchases and sent back what I didn’t want I gave my feedback on each item and I hear each box gets better and better as they get to know your taste and fit. Right now I’m thinking that I’ll get a box every few months. Ready to sign up? I’d love it if you use my referral link which is here and at the beginning of this post.

  • what i wore this weekend // sunglasses edition

I’ve been meaning to do another outfit post for awhile. The problem is taking the photos, because I don’t have a tripod and my husband is, shall we say, less invested in getting a good picture than I am. However he IS a good sport, so I hope to keep these coming every now and then.

    sunglasses outfit

shirt: Old Navy // pants: Banana Republic (old) // shoes: Teva // belt: old, who knows? // sunglasses: c/o Firmoo // necklace: heirloom from my grandmother

I wore this to church and all day Sunday. It was gorgeous and warm outside and I wanted to be comfortable but not overly casual. These t-shirts from Old Navy are one of my favorite things ever. I have them in several colors and wear them all the time. I plan on buying many more because they are so comfortable, fit well, and so far have held up to lots of washing. You can wear them on their own or use for layering. These pants are also one of my favorites because they are such a flattering fit and I feel light and happy when I wear them. The sandals are my go-to’s, are super comfortable and supportive, and I’m a fan of mixing casual with dressy so I decided they worked.

    DSCF4140

Now let’s talk about these sunglasses. I wore them a LOT over the weekend because I came down with some kind of eye infection. I am not sure if it is a type of pinkeye or not, but I had a ton of crust gluing my eyes shut in the morning, redness, itchiness, and pain. I decided to forgo mascara and just wore these indoors for half the time when I was in public.

Lately I have had a really hard time finding sunglasses that fit my head. My old ones were falling off (I think they got bent so they were too big) and my new ones hurt my head after awhile. Firmoo, an online optical store, let me choose a pair to try out and I picked these, which are actually tinted regular glasses with no prescription. They fit great and I’m a fan. A few things about the company if you’re interested in trying it out: they have a cool “virtual try-on” feature where you upload a photo, they’re super affordable because the glasses aren’t branded, and you can get your first pair free.

Anyway! I’m back at work now even though my eyes look a little scary. I’m planning to visit ye olde employee health clinic at some point today to get some drops or ointment without having to miss work for something so small. Have a great week, you.

  • what i wore // leggings & tights

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of No nonsense. All opinions are 100% mine. No nonsense tights and leggings can be found at food and drug stores as well as mass retail stores.

Even though I live in southeast Texas, for some strange reason I have more sweaters in my closet than anything else. I get way more excited about fall fashion than any other season, so I didn’t hesitate to sign up for this opportunity to try out a pair of No nonsense leggings and tights. I may have sweaters in abundance, but I don’t have much in the way of dresses, skirts, or pants (other than jeans) that are cool-weather appropriate, and leggings and tights can extend the life of warm weather clothes.

I didn’t get to choose the color of items, and I guess I was expecting black, but what I got was denim leggings. Jeggings? No, I can’t use that word. But anyway, these aren’t the kind that you can wear just like jeans, they’re the kind that need to be covered around the bum area, if you know what I mean.

shirt: H&M // sweater: Target // leggings: No nonsense // shoes: Blowfish // necklace: A Cup of Green Ginger (Etsy – similar here) // belt: Target // bag: Fossil

I wore this outfit to a family reunion and it was perfect. For most of the time I had the sweater off, but a storm blew through with a cool breeze so I did get to wear it some.

For fun I decided to put Meredith in her denim leggings too. She didn’t get that we were supposed to be posing though.

    On Meredith:

shirt: babyGap // leggings: Target // shoes: StrideRite

A perfect fall outfit that I will be wearing again.

Like I said earlier, I didn’t get to choose the colors I received which is how I ended up with red tights. I am racking my brain right now to see if I can think of a single other red clothing item I own, and I can’t do it. Red is just not my color. However! Christmas is near, and red is a Christmas color. Red also goes well with gray and black, two colors I have plenty of. And thus I put together a winter outfit that I never would have worn without the tights because of the dreariness factor.

dress: Banana Republic // sweater: Banana Republic // tights: No nonsense // belt: Target // boots: Nine West

I only got one good picture of this outfit because it was way too hot to actually wear it anywhere right now. I just hope it gets cold enough around Christmas time to wear this.

I really recommend the No nonsense leggings & tights. They felt really soft and well made, the sizing chart was right on (for me), and the leggings held up well all day. Even better is that you can get them at drugstores and grocery stores and they’re super affordable. I’m pretty sure I’ll be buying some more colors.

  • what i wore this weekend

I’m not a trendy person and I’m on a severe budget when it comes to many things, including clothes. I wear scrubs all week long so it’s hard for me to spend money on them. BUT because of that, I do like to (try to) put a little more effort into my appearance on the weekend. I’m 30 years old now; it’s time for me to develop some sort of personal style. I’m hoping by photographing my outfits I’ll be able to refine it.

Saturdays I usually do chores around the house and then go on some form of excursion whether it’s boring errands, shopping for fun or just to get out of the house, brunch with a friend, or dinner with family.

This is what I wore for lunch with my mom and shopping for fun.

It was still hot, but the weather cooled off significantly enough that I was able to wear a cardigan. My shoes are not pictured because I was wearing for comfort and they don’t really match the outfit. I’m definitely in the market for some more sandals. Another thing that I’m noticing from looking at this picture is that my white legs are not super attractive, but it’s Houston so I can’t really get away with never wearing shorts or short skirts.

cardigan: J.Crew // tank: Target // skirt: Old Navy // necklace: H&M (old)

    This is what Meredith wore.

When we go out I have a thing about dressing her like a little adult. I don’t know why, but I can’t bring myself to put her in onesies or rompers anymore. It doesn’t make sense because in most other areas I baby her. She’s wearing disposables here because our diaper sprayer broke and we haven’t fixed it yet (and I can’t face washing cloth diapers without it). These adorable shorts would probably be too small otherwise.

shirt: Old Navy // shorts: Sketchers // shoes: Pediped

Necklace also doubles as a baby snack.

  • Some Goals, Sort Of

Recently, in my coffee-less state (this is important because everything seems worse without coffee), I have started to feel a growing discontent with some areas of my life. Not major things, but little things. I’ve kind of hit a plateau in a lot of areas and it’s bringing me down.

I don’t have a lot of extra time or money, and I’m really good about cutting myself some slack because of it, but I’m at the point where I think some productivity and changes could really benefit me mentally. Here’s what I’m thinking about:

    Home

Here is our home. We’ve lived here about three years, and I love it. But we never finished furnishing it, and there are a couple rooms that aren’t being used at all because of it, and more that are just plain boring or ugly. I love being at home, and I want it to be a place that inspires me and makes me happy.

There are some bigger projects that need to be done: new carpet, new tile, redo or update the bathrooms, and (lower on the priority list) updating the kitchen. But right now I just want to get the whole place furnished and somewhat decorated.

Thinking about it as a whole is overwhelming, so instead I think I’ll just take it a room at a time. First up is the living room. It gets used a lot, and it’s one of the rooms we’ve done the most with already.

(Sorry about the bad lighting in these pictures.)

Here are some things I want to do in this space:

    • Get a large jute rug
    • Style the coffee table
    • Style the mantel
    • Style the buffet area
    • Purchase bar stools
    • Switch out the sheer curtains for something with fresh color
    • Add some plants

I’m not going to let myself think or stress about the other rooms until I finish with this one.

    Personal Style

So, I’m not a stylistic nightmare, but I do have a long way to go before I really feel comfortable and confident in this area. I wear scrubs every day so it’s hard to get excited about clothes and accessories when I hardly get to wear them. But I went to a wedding the other weekend and I had a hard time really feeling polished, and I’d like to change that.

    >Hair: I have fine, straight hair that just hangs and won’t hold a curl. I’ve never been very adventurous with it, and I’m not willing to spend much time on it unless it’s for a special event. This weekend I’m going to get it cut, and I’m thinking a bob along these lines:

Images found here, here, and here.

At the moment I already have sideswept bangs and they really bother me at work, so I either clip it aside or wear a headband wrap. Once I get it cut I’ll work on how to style it for every day wear and for nice events.

    >Makeup: I have deliberately cut back on the amount of makeup I wear because I like the way I look naturally and I don’t enjoy the process of putting it on. Most of the time I only wear mascara and mineral powder foundation. Sometimes I apply eyeliner and blush. I’m fine with this. However, I want to learn how to look fancy. I want to have the products at my disposal and be able to look a little more glamorous if the mood strikes. If you have recommendations, or have written about your recommendations before, please share!

    >Clothes: This is going to take some work. Although I lost almost all of my weight from pregnancy, the sad truth is that my body will never be the same again. All of my nice things were bought pre-pregnancy, and most of them just aren’t right anymore. I’ve been doing some thinking about what I want my wardrobe to look like, and I’ve determined that I want to stay mostly with a classic, conservative style with elements of sporty and hippie thrown in. I don’t even know if that makes sense, but it sounds good to me.

    Steps to achievement:

    • Go through my closet with a critical eye. Get rid of lots of things. I do this a lot so it shouldn’t be too hard; I’m not overly sentimental about clothes.
    • Consult a wardrobe essentials list and determine the items that I lack (including jewelry, handbags, and shoes – I need it all).
    • Um, save up some money.
    • Shop – preferably sales and thrift stores!

    Lifestyle

Some other things I want to make an effort towards:

    >Exercise: I’ve been an athlete all my life, and I find myself in a place where I haven’t exercised in a year. I have a really nice bike that is sitting in the garage unused. This is not okay. I really think it’s feasible for me to go running with Meredith in the jogging stroller three times a week right after work, and then take one bike ride on the weekends. I wanted to start this week, but the weather was terrible the first half and then Meredith got sick. Blah.

    >Cooking: I don’t cook. My husband doesn’t cook. What do we eat? Breakfast is oatmeal, lunch is provided for me most of the time (drug companies, woohoo) and if not I have a Lean Cuisine (David eats out), and dinner is something like cereal, sandwiches, eating out, or at a family member’s house. I’m not happy about it, I’m worried about providing food for Meredith, and I don’t know what to do about it. I’ve tried to start cooking before and it never lasts. I don’t even want to think about it, but I’ll have to pretty soon.

    >Church: We’re semi-committed to a new church now, and I think I’m ready to start getting involved and making friends. There’s a small group that is for young families that my friend (and doula!) attends, so I’d like to visit. We also need to start tithing again.

I guess these are kind of like my goals right now, even though I didn’t set any sort of deadline because that would just stress me out. I’m totally open to any kind of advice or recommendation on anything. I hope to keep updating as I make progress, because progress WILL be made!
