  • I Worked Up the Energy to Write An Update

This is what’s left of the annual nurse’s gala that we went to last night. I was one of three finalists for the Outstanding Graduate Nurse for my hospital. I know you’re on the edge of your seat, so I’ll just let you know right now that I didn’t win. But I can still put “finalist” on my resume, right?

We got ourselves all fancied up and drove downtown to the convention center. It happens to be right next door to the Toyota Center, where the Rockets were playing in a playoff game, and Minute Maid Park, where the Astros also had a game. Obviously the traffic was not ideal. We realized we didn’t have cash, so we had to drive around to find an ATM. Easier said than done when you’re not used to all the one-way streets and lack of parking that is downtown. We ended up having to park seven blocks away in an “event parking lot” where a guy on a bicycle with a little carriage behind him asked us if we wanted a ride to the game. We opted to walk. Once we were there, it was quite nice and I am grateful that David got to meet my coworkers. I’m also grateful for the delicious chocolate fondue dessert they served, even though it kept me up past my bedtime.

When we came home our living room looked like this:

So the painters did finally come, even though they sure are taking their time getting everything done. We accidentally set the house alarm before going to sleep and had a rude awakening this morning when the painters set it off on their way in. They basically kicked us out, so now we’re staying with my in-laws. When we went home this evening to pick up some of our things, it looked like this:

It’s covered in primer, and now we feel like we’re living the scene in E.T. when everything is white and covered in plastic. We’re just missing our space suits.

In other news, I’ve missed three days of triathlon training due to previous commitments, so this morning I picked back up by going for a run. Afterward I went to give blood and I had to be deferred because my hematocrit was low. (It seemed high to me, although as an oncology nurse my views of blood counts are a little skewed. Cancer patients have notoriously low blood counts.) I was disappointed, but this is probably for the best because I have been inordinately exhausted all day, in fact it’s taken me this whole time just to work up the energy to write this post, and imagine what I would have been like if I had been deprived of a pint of my oxygen carrying life fluid. I rescheduled for Thursday, so hopefully by that time my red blood cells will have recouped themselves.

Thanks for tuning in to this edition of my haphazard life, and hopefully I’ll be back soon with pictures of our finished living room.

  • The Cost of a Deal

First, we (I) stressed out about how much it costs to have our living room and kitchen cabinets painted. Then we decided to do it ourselves. Then we got an amazing deal through a friend and scheduled them. We chose and purchased paint, I cleared everything out of our cabinets, David pushed all our furniture away from the wall, and we dropped our dogs off at our parents’ house. Our house is in upheaval, but everything was ready.

Except…the painters forgot about us. When we got home from work today, they hadn’t come.

I suppose it’s my fault for not calling to confirm, but I guess I just placed trust in a professional business. When I called the painter, my suspicions were confirmed: he forgot. But the thing is, we’re getting a deal, so who are we to complain? They are now coming on Friday, but if they don’t show up, what are we going to do? We’re going to wait, because we’re not rich. It’s better than doing it ourselves, and we can’t pay full price.

It’s the same thing with our furniture. We ordered it in February. It still isn’t here. It was supposed to come last week, but due to flooding the shipment got postponed. I am wondering if it will ever come at all.

Oh, and there is still the drywall to be replaced in our bathroom from the leak in our attic. Once again, we have a friend who is supposed to be fixing it for us, but I don’t know when it will get done. Sometimes you get what you pay for, but as new homeowners we don’t have the money to pay for it all at once.

  • Why I Am Training For A Triathlon

I’ve been an athlete my whole life, mostly playing soccer but there was a stint a couple years ago where I fancied myself a runner. Unfortunately, when I started my job almost a year ago, I had to quit playing soccer because of my crazy schedule, and I haven’t really kept up much of a serious exercise routine since then.

I thought it would be enough to eat fairly healthy (which I do), have a physically demanding job (which I do), and occasionally supplement with yoga and bike riding (which I do). But despite all this, my weight continues to creep up ever so slowly. In talking to David about this last week, he told me, “Things change as you get older. You have to fight it.”

Those words stuck with me. It would be so easy to just let my body go, but I don’t want to. I want to be in great shape before I have a child so that it’s not impossible for me to slim down again afterwards. I want to really take care of myself.

I decided that training for a triathlon is how I am going to accomplish this. I’ve been interested in doing one for awhile now, and why put it off? I have running experience, so it shouldn’t be too hard to work up to 5k distance again. I already own a nice bike that I want to ride more anyway. I know how to swim, and will appreciate the variety it brings to my workouts. (Although I went to the pool for the first time yesterday and it was HARD.)

After only a few days of training, I know that I will probably be in the best shape of my life when this is all over with. I love having a goal to aim for: The Austin Triathlon on Labor Day. It makes me excited to exercise. It also gets me outside, which I don’t do enough of. I’m nervous because there are a lot of technical things I don’t know about, and it will mean doing some kind of training almost every day, but I know it’ll be worth it.

Anyone want to join me, even if it’s long-distance?

  • Goals Update

Just wanted to check in and let you know how I’m doing with my 101 goals. Although I’ve only fully completed one task, I am working in bits and pieces on others. So for the sake of accountability, here’s the update:

#1 – Shop at a farmer’s market: I found out that one meets near my house every Saturday, and I have plans to visit with a friend of mine a week from tomorrow.

#2 – Cook dinner once a week for a month: I’ve actually cooked twice this week! And one was a new recipe! This is a breakthrough for me.

#7 – Do a bike race: I am officially in training for a triathlon, which totally counts. More on this soon.

    #8 – Run another 5k: See #7

#9 – Unlock all the exercises on Wii Fit: It’s a slow process, but I’m working on it.

#10 – Do a Wii Fit body test once a week for 12 weeks: 2 weeks down.

#16 – Find the perfect mascara: I tried a new one that is definitely NOT perfect.

#20 – Pay off my credit card bill: I’m chipping away at it each month. This will probably take a couple of years, unfortunately.

#31 – Take the charge nurse class: I’m scheduled for sometime in May.

#33 – Get promoted: My annual evaluation is at the end of May, and I’m working on fulfilling all the requirements that will make me a “clinical colleague” instead of a “clinical apprentice.”

#36 – Watch all of the movies that have won Best Picture: I added them all to my Netflix queue. Only two are unavailable at the moment.

#40 – Read all the books I own but haven’t read: I added them all to my Goodreads “to read” list, and am reading one now (see sidebar).

#55 – Change passport to married name: I mailed my application, it’s out of my hands now.

#60 – Get the house painted: Through a friend, we are getting a major discount on professional painting and they’re coming next Wednesday! They are only doing the two hard rooms though; there will still be painting for us to do ourselves after that.

#73 – Babysit my new nephew: Well, he was born! That’s the first step, right?

#83 – Start using reusable shopping bags: I bought 5 at HEB. Now to use them on a regular basis!

#97 – Buy another leash and walk the dogs simultaneously: Done!

When I heard that my sister-in-law Vanessa was in labor on Tuesday morning, I had a lot of emotions and thoughts. Excitement, fear, nervousness, more excitement. Excitement because hello! New baby in the family! But nervousness and fear because although I love babies and kids, I’m not around them very much so I’m not always sure how to handle them. And there is that unknown quantity of how the family dynamics will change after this. I’m sure it will be great, even better than before, but change is always a little scary.

After a night of contractions and a day of labor in the hospital, Lucas Sim Forbes was born on Tuesday evening. It was really nice of him to choose that particular time to come because it made it pretty convenient for the whole family to be there. Although we only got to see him through the nursery window, we were able to go back yesterday and hold him ourselves!

David offered Lucas his first coke, but he wasn’t interested. Maybe next year.

I promise he’s not crying, just yawning! Being a baby is tiring work.

Up close and personal. He looks pretty good for one day old!

When I think back to high school when I first became friends with my brother-in-law Scott, and I think about our lives now, I can hardly believe it. We never would have thought that I would end up married to his brother, and he would be the first one of the family to get married and have a child! But I couldn’t have asked for a better family situation, where my family and David’s can come together so seamlessly. I’m really excited for this new addition, not least because I want to practice being around someone else’s baby before I have one of my own! :)
