while she was trying to climb into the crib on her own and I gave her a boost with my hands as a “step”…
Meredith: (giggling) remember that mommy? Remember that?
Me: yes I remember that from two seconds ago.

    Meredith: what’s that mommy?
    Me: that’s your wart.
Meredith: is that from Jesus? Did Jesus put that there?

when we were picking her up from the grandparents’ house after a date night…
    Meredith: where’d you go, guys?
Me: we went to the movies. We’ll take you to the movies one day when you get bigger.
Meredith: ok! I will go and you guys stay here and then I’ll come back.

driving to church we pass a hospital…
Me: that’s a hospital like where I work. Do you remember what I do at work?
Meredith: you’re a nurse! What are you Daddy?
    David: a paralegal.
Me: Daddy helps people with their money.
    Meredith: what is Liam?
    Me: he’s a baby!
    Meredith: what am I?
    Me: a kid!
    Meredith: no I work!!
Me: ok what do you do for work?
Meredith: play on the computer. I want to buy a pink one.
Me: you want to be a blogger?
Meredith: no a nurse! Because I’m gonna feed my baby because I’m gonna get big boobs. Right now I have little boobs.
Me: that’s right, but you know mommy doesn’t feed people with her boobs at work. It’s a different kind of nurse.
(had to clarify THAT misunderstanding real quick.)

while on a walk we saw a pizza delivery car with a sign on top…
Meredith: look!! he has something on his car! that is SO silly.
(we walk a few more minutes and then the car drives by us again on its way out)
Meredith: he’s back!!! (sighs) I’m SO glad he’s back.

while trying to put a sticker on and it got crumpled and she was frustrated…
Meredith: (crying) now I can’t use this one anymore ever!!
David: I can fix it for you, okay?
    Meredith: but it’s crapped!!
    David: huh??
    Meredith: it’s crapped!!
    David: cracked?
    Meredith: (nodding seriously)

Meredith: when I go to school I wanna show my best friends that my nails are painted.
David: who are your best friends?
Meredith: Kayla, Arriya, Samani, and Layla!
Me: what about Caleb and Hunter?
Meredith: no I’m not friends with boys! Only girls!
David: since when are you only friends with girls?
    Meredith: for five weeks.

while watching me eat yogurt in the car as we rushed to a kids’ birthday party…
Meredith: (sighing) I don’t have any food in my mouth and I’m sad about it.

Meredith: Mommy, you were a baby?
    Me: yup!
Meredith: and you wore a diaper?
    Me: yup!
Meredith: haha!! Oh mommy, you’re so cute. You are my favorite mommy.

  • a tip for spending less money

    how to save money

In our house we are getting serious about paying off our debt and saving money. Funny how as soon as you tell yourself that you can’t spend anything, all you want to do is buy stuff! For real, though.

I’ve long known that for us it’s the little stuff here and there that adds up, but it’s so easy to justify those small purchases. So when we cut out all extra spending recently, I had to find a way to deal with the urges to buy things. “Retail therapy” really does work in the short run, but since it’s not in line with my overall values I know I’ll regret it later. On the other hand, I know that if I just flat out deny myself, I’ll eventually feel oppressed or make excuses as to why a particular situation doesn’t count.

This is what I began doing instead: when the urge to spend money arrives, I think about what’s causing it. What is that craving really for? And how can I satisfy it in another way?

For example, the other night I had a strong craving for ice cream. (Let’s be honest, that happens every day.) But not only is that unhealthy, we didn’t have any ice cream in the house so I would have had to buy some. My first instinct was to suggest a frozen yogurt outing for the family. But I thought about it a bit more and realized what I really wanted was something cold and creamy. I had all the stuff at home to make a smoothie, so that’s what I did, and I was happy. Honestly, even just applesauce would have satisfied the craving at that point.

Another example: I recently began feeling dissatisfied with the state of our house. I got all these ideas on how to refresh it, but they involved buying things: a new couch, a rolling cart, a rug, etc. So after realizing that I couldn’t do that, I figured out that what I really wanted was a bit of a change. Decluttering and reorganizing/repurposing what I do have will give me that same sort of high. So I scheduled a decluttering day, and for the things that I do actually need to add to our house, I’m searching the free section of Craigslist and Freecycle.

So far this strategy is helping immensely. It’s also fun to keep track of the things that I didn’t buy, that I ordinarily would have, so I can see exactly how much we’ve saved. What are your best tips for saving money?

  • around here

Around here it’s been a fairly normal week. We are in money-saving mode and I’ve managed to trick myself into considering it a game to see how little money I can spend. I’m also planning a trip to Galveston (an island town about an hour away from us) for next weekend, and after that a big house decluttering. Both have me excited in different ways. :)

    around here / kapachino

Around here Meredith is healing up from a dog bite she got last weekend. We know the dog well so we aren’t worried about rabies or anything crazy like that, but it was still scary. Dog bites can do strange things and hers sure enough got infected. It’s not healing quite like I want it to, so I’m giving it the weekend and if it’s not any better we will head back to the doctor.

Around here I haven’t been getting enough sleep. It’s taken a toll on me so we are all working on getting a better bedtime routine in place. My morning routine is definitely not as good when I get to sleep too late or wake up a million times at night.

Around here Liam has been healthy the past week after getting over a second virus in as many weeks. He followed up with the ENT and is clear on that front, thankfully. He does have a weird little rash on his face that has been there for weeks, though. For now I’m trying different OTC creams to see if anything works.

Around here I’m gearing up for a busy weekend with two kids’ birthday parties on the same day that David has to work. Other than basic chores I’m keeping my expectations low for what will get accomplished.

    around here / kapachino

Around here I’ve been getting a lot of reading done (currently reading this and listening to this) but not much crafting. I did just place an order for prints from the Project Life app, and I’m excited to share those soon.

And around here I’ve been having so much fun posting to the new Facebook page! So far I’ve been using it to share links that I might normally save up for a link roundup. I’d love to get some discussion going over there soon.

    Have an awesome weekend!

  • morning routine

    morning routine

I don’t know what it was, exactly, that made me feel so tired and out of control over the past few months, but I was. During that time I let a lot of my healthy practices slip away. I wasn’t sleeping well, and I’d wake up late and spend my spare minutes browsing my phone, then I’d rush the kids out the door and work all day, have an energy crash in the afternoon, eat whatever I wanted to give myself a boost, and convince myself that we were too busy for me to spend time exercising.

The first step in me feeling more like myself was to let go of the extras, to recall my priorities, and that helped a lot. It changed my attitude, which gave me the motivation to work on healthy habits again.

The second step was to establish a solid morning routine. I crave structure and boundaries, and I don’t have much (if any) time to myself during the weekdays so I knew I had to reclaim this time. I’ve been practicing this new morning routine for a couple of weeks now and it’s truly been revolutionary. But first, here’s what it looks like:

    8:00 p.m.

The morning starts at night. I let myself check my phone once more for notifications before getting ready for bed, and then I plug it in to charge in the living room.

Also notable: I go to sleep when the kids do, around 8:30 or 9:00 p.m. I’d love to stay up an extra hour with David when they get a little older, but for now this is working to get us all the most sleep.

    4:30 a.m.

My alarm goes off. I now use a simple little clock on my bedside table; I like how small it is because when the first alarm goes off I hold it in my hand. It has short snoozes, about 4 minutes, and I allow myself three.

    4:45 a.m.

Out of bed. It’s really not that hard to get up because usually Liam has been nursing on and off for awhile (I had to start closing the cats out of our room at night because they were just too active for me). I go straight to make coffee and while it brews I feed the cats, put away dishes that have dried overnight, and get stuff ready to make breakfast.

    5:00 a.m.

I am sitting in the oversized chair in the craft room with my coffee, doing my Bible study (right now I’m reading through this). Sometimes Liam wakes up during this time and I will bring him to nurse and that way I can usually at least finish my study. If I finish what I’m reading or working on before thirty minutes are up, I will journal and/or pray.

    5:30 a.m.

I read for pleasure for thirty minutes. Notice I haven’t looked at my phone once yet. Game changer! If Liam is awake at this point, I will still try to read but we will move to the kids’ room where he can play.

    6:00 a.m.

It’s time to start getting ready for the day. I usually go in this order: make and eat breakfast, pack lunches, get dressed, do makeup, get Liam dressed, then finally get Meredith dressed. I do let myself check my phone at this point, and most days I’ll listen to a podcast while I get ready.

    7:15 a.m.

We head to the car and I drop the kids at daycare before going to work.

    Some notes:

    • I’m 100% a morning person and I know waking before 5 isn’t going to happen for most people, but for me it’s totally worth it to start my day off right. I highly suggest figuring out some sort of morning routine that works for you.
    • Having the structure of timing all planned out has really helped me. You might not be so rigid, but it keeps me on track.
    • I feel such relief that every day I have dedicated Bible study and reading time. This is helping so much!
    • Lately the kids have been sleeping till at least 6, and Meredith until around 6:30. They used to wake up around 5 or 5:30, so obviously that makes a difference.
    • I do try to follow this routine on the weekends as well, but I tend to push everything back by an hour.

So tell me, do you have a morning routine? What does it look like? Any ideas or insights to share?
