    herbs & spices cross stitch

I’m on my own with the kids until Sunday evening! I didn’t exactly plan it this way, but it worked out so that we have lots of stuff to do to fill the time. I’m hoping it’ll keep the tantrums to a minimum. Here’s what we have going on.

    Friday afternoon/evening

    • Go for a run before picking up kids (maybe)
    • Meal plan – I usually do this on Saturday but since David’s not around to do the shopping & we’re busy Sunday I want to shop a day early
    • Dinner at Mom & Dad’s house; hopefully do some work on Liam’s stocking while we’re there, and also “shop” their house. My mom has a bunch of old furniture, frames, and other treasures that she’s not currently using and I want to see what I can repurpose. (And check out the awesome framed cross stitch at the top of this post that she found for me! I love it.)

    Saturday

    • Weekly chores – laundry, floors, plant care, spot cleaning counters, tables, & bathrooms
    • Take Liam’s monthly photos
    • Drop Liam off with David’s mom so Meredith & I can run errands which are…
    • Going to Joann’s to pick up some quilt batting and possibly a gift for a kids’ birthday party
    • Target to check out the blenders
    • Grocery store
    • Visiting a friend to check out some natural self care products she is selling
    • Drop Meredith with David’s mom so they can go visit Pappy in the nursing home, probably take Liam back
    • Host my whole family for dinner – a belated Mother’s Day gathering. My dad is grilling!

    Sunday

    • Church
    • Birthday party for my pseudo-niece at The Pink Pokka Dot. It’s a mermaid tea party – going to be soooo adorable.
    • David comes home!
    • Church small group for dinner

It’s a lot of stuff but I’m really excited about most of it! What do you have going on this weekend?

  • currently

    currently bedside table

thinking that it might be time to switch to iced coffee in the mornings.

reading Allegiant…still. It’s just not exciting me so I’m not making time to read. I need to just abandon it or quickly push through.

re-reading Practicing His Presence. Other than the Bible this book has been the most influential on my spiritual life and from the very first pages I feel deeply moved.

wanting a blender for smoothies. It doesn’t have to be a nice one, just functioning.

surprised to find a $50 gift card to Target in my wallet that I haven’t used. How did that happen? Might use it for the blender!

excited about the new (free!) gym opening up at work. It’s going to be perfect for summer workouts.

training for a 5k on the 24th. Due to random circumstances (weather, sickness) I haven’t run in over a week so I’m a little nervous about how this is going to go.

wondering if a Fitbit is a good investment. Everyone seems to love them, but is it something that is worth it in the long run?

hoping to pick up some quilt batting this weekend since I have a coupon.

listening to this song on repeat.

on my own at home until Sunday while my husband goes on a fishing trip with his dad and uncle.

  • around here // real life home edition

My home is far from where I want it to be, but it’s cozy and in general it makes me happy. It stays pretty clean because I’m a “tidy as you go” kind of person, but nevertheless it’s not usually picture perfect. I decided to take some photos of our most used spaces with evidence of real life in them. I think this is the kind of thing that I will really want to remember down the road, not how everything looked perfectly styled.

    breakfast nook

This is our only eating table. More often than not you’ll find that cushion on the floor because that’s Meredith’s seat and she hates the cushion.

    counter

Here is our counter peninsula, aka the dumping ground. I really try to keep it clean but it’s pretty tough. Here you see the day’s mail, preschool artwork, some random toys and candy of Meredith’s, a cup, gum, chocolate bunny from Easter, and papers that need to be taken care of.

    kitchen

In the kitchen Meredith decided to use her stool as a little table and then abandoned her cup and bowl.

    reading room

This is the chair I sit in every morning to do my Bible study and reading. I love the low light when I first get up, but this room stays pretty dim all day since there is no overhead light.

    craft room

The craft room is somewhat organized but totally not decorated and is a mishmash of old furniture. It’s where I keep Liam’s playmat and some other baby toys. I think Meredith brought those hand weights in there; I haven’t been using them lately. She likes to pick them up and say, “too heavy mommy!”

    nursery

Of course I spend lots of time standing at the changing table right now. I’m adding Liam’s monthly photos underneath Meredith’s first year as he grows. On the table I keep everything I might need out for easy access including a tub of coconut oil, xylitol (we give it to M. before bed for healthy teeth), medicines, sprays, regular and cloth wipes, and essential oils. There is also a teether lying out, a diffuser, and some clothes that Liam has outgrown that I need to put away.

    bedside table

These four books are constantly on the nightstand because Meredith wants to read them every. single. night before bed. They are good books! But I am so tired of them!

    vanity

The master bathroom is a good size and has a good layout, but it’s super outdated and is pretty much the last thing on my priority list to update. Here is my little vanity area where I do my makeup.

    bathroom

And here’s the main sink area. Liam’s tub stays out all the time right now, and kids’ towels are always hanging in there.

    patio

Our patio and backyard have been so neglected. The dogs tore up any effort we made, so we just gave up other than putting Meredith’s toys out there. I am so excited though; for Mother’s Day David got me some soil and promised his manual labor to whip it back into shape. Next year I hope to have flowers!

So that’s our home, real life style. Of course I would love to have it beautifully designed and decorated but in actuality that takes a lot of time and money, so we are content to fix it a little at a time. We don’t plan to move (anytime soon, if ever) so we have a long time to get it where we want it to be!

  • goodbye eddie

    goodbye eddie

This morning I woke up to find that our dog Eddie had died sometime in the night. We are sad.

As you may know, Eddie has been struggling with severe anxiety for the last several months since Cleo died. We had been trying everything we could possibly think of to help her and I thought we were on the right track, but in the last week she relapsed and became destructive to our house and furnishings. We don’t blame her; we know she was suffering and didn’t know how to deal with it. It’s possible that she was physically sick but we were unaware. She had been checked by the vet and there wasn’t anything obviously wrong other than her mental anguish. Either way, she was no longer the calm, happy dog that we knew.

Today I am remembering Eddie. I am grateful that she was a companion to my husband from the time she was a puppy, and she saw him through some incredibly difficult years prior to the time we met. I am grateful for the joy that she brought to our lives. I am grateful that she died at home instead of forcing us into a heartbreaking decision. I am grateful for all her years of delighted devotion.

It’s so strange to go from having three dogs just a few years ago to having none. There are reminders everywhere. The house will be much quieter and calmer now, but emptier too.

  • a self check printable worksheet

Last week I was driving and my head just started spinning with all the things in my life I needed to keep straight. There are things I need to do to keep our lives running day to day, areas that I want to focus on for my own personal growth, projects to tackle, relationships to improve. All of a sudden I had the overwhelming need to separate it all out and have a space to do a little bit of journaling about where I am in each area of life along with a place to note any actions I need to take.

I wanted something physical that I could hand write on and tape up where I’ll see it. This is what I came up with:

    how am i doing worksheet

Filling this out was incredibly therapeutic. It allowed me to gauge where I’m at in a bunch of different areas and write out the next step that needs to be taken to improve in them. I have it posted in my bathroom so I can ruminate on it while I get ready in the morning and wind down at night. Then I plan to go through the action steps and schedule them into my to-do list. I think I’m going to take the time to fill one of these out every month or so!

Have you ever done anything like this? Do you compartmentalize your life or is it all jumbled together? For me things tend to flow one into the other and I’m always juggling a ton of different lines of thought, but sometimes separating them out helps. If you’re interested, I wanted to make this chart available to you to customize. You can access it as a Google doc here, or click on the picture below, then just save a copy and edit the categories however you like!
