  • Love Story

Once upon a time there was a girl who wanted to be a nurse. In order to achieve this goal she quit her full-time job, enrolled in school, and began working a few hours a week at an office that offered her flexible hours. She happened to be dating a boy, long-distance, who she was no longer in love with and, in fact, she wasn’t sure she ever really was to begin with. The problem was that this boy was decidedly in love with her, and was making plans to move to her city. When she began her new part-time job she was slowly coming to the realization that she didn’t need to stay in this relationship for loyalty’s sake.

In the office where this girl now worked, there was a man. The two of them were casually acquainted with each other because his younger brother happened to be one of the girl’s best friends in high school. They immediately struck up an easy friendship. Unbeknownst to the girl, this man was pursuing her as more than just a friend. And unbeknownst to him, the girl wasn’t “single” as she appeared, since she had never mentioned anything otherwise.

Until one day, she did. Before the Thanksgiving holidays, she mentioned that her boyfriend was coming into town. He was fascinated. They had a long conversation about her relationship with this boy, and the man left feeling, ironically, closer to the girl than ever before.

When she returned to work the week after the holidays, she shared with the man that she had broken up with her boyfriend, a horrendous ordeal that she was overjoyed to have behind her. Two days later, she was in the file room when he approached her and asked her out. In his mind she had only been dating someone for a week, when in reality it had been over a year. She was caught off guard. On one hand, she was drained from the relationship that had just ended, but on the other hand she thought that she might have fun getting to know this man. She asked him if she could think about it. He took that as a negative.

Instead, they continued to become better friends. She began spending entire days with him and his family on the weekends. Although she still had some concerns about getting into a relationship, she finally let him take her out. Things progressed slowly for a short while, and then she let her nerves get the best of her. On a Friday night she told him that she could only be friends for now. She wasn’t ready.

The following week was difficult, as they had to work together. But the man proved his worth by still being just as good a friend as ever to her. During the next month the two of them continued to talk, and her interest in him continued to grow. She had long conversations with her two best friends, both of who encouraged her to give him a chance. One weekend she went to his house with a group of people for a game night. They sat next to each other, and she let his leg touch hers. Her stomach did a flip, which both surprised and excited her.

A few days later he invited her over to watch a movie. As they watched, his dog sat in between them and they both petted her. Their fingers touched. He asked her if he could hold her hand. She hesitated. He told her it wouldn’t mean anything except that he was holding her hand. She smiled and said yes. She didn’t know it at the time, but her heart had been won.

  • Anniversary Week

Words can never tell you, however, — form them, transform them anyway, — how perfectly dear you are to me — perfectly dear to my heart and soul.

I look back, and in every one point, every word and gesture, every letter, every silence — you have been entirely perfect to me — I would not change one word, one look.

    -Robert Browning, to Elizabeth Barrett

At the end of this week, on October 3rd, my husband and I will have been married for exactly one year. In honor of that milestone, this week my posts will be one big celebration of our relationship. Happy anniversary week to us!

  • #15. Drink 64 oz. of water a day for a week: My Thoughts

    • There is nothing wrong with my kidneys.
    • I peed. A lot.
    • I now know what it might be like to have diabetes insipidus.
    • Drinking this much water and being a nurse aren’t mutually exclusive, but almost.
    • It’s better to drink the bulk of the volume in the morning rather than at night.
    • Did I mention that I peed a lot? Y’all, it was NONSTOP.

Other than the peeing, which was the main observation that I made this past week, I’m not sure if I have much else to report. Maybe if I kept this kind of hydration up I would get less headaches or have more energy or something, but I can’t say that after only one week. I think I was less hungry, but I also can’t say that that stopped me from eating whole servings of chocolate chips out of the bag.

In conclusion, from now on I won’t be measuring my intake but I will make an effort to increase it. I’ve learned to drink water without ice, which is a big step and one that makes it much easier to chug. So here’s to my new well-hydrated lifestyle!

This was one of my 101 goals in 1001 days. How is your list of goals coming?

  • Weekend Goals

    1. Watch three episodes of Mad Men.

    2. Finish reading Midwives.

    3. Prepare my blog posts for next week. It’s anniversary week!

    4. Clean the floors.

    5. Run at least once.

    6. Cook something…maybe.

  • Hair Makeover

I haven’t done anything with my hair for awhile, and it’s definitely been getting on my nerves. My personal hair stylist also happens to be one of my best friends, Emily. She just had a baby on September 12 so I wasn’t sure if she’d be up to doing my hair yet, but I figured I’d ask. (I also wanted an excuse to come see her little boy.) I was so excited that she said yes!

Before I left, I took some pictures of my hair. This is the best one (it’s hard to take good pictures of yourself; at least it is for me):

My hair is straight, extremely fine, and doesn’t hold much of a curl. It’s always hard for me to pick a cut that I think will work with it and look good with my face shape. I also knew that I wanted to change the color. It’s fall now, time to darken it up!

I asked Emily to make it noticeably darker but not shockingly so. She did a great job interpreting my vague wishes, and even left some of my dark blonde in there to blend the new color.

Once my hair was colored and washed it was time for a cut. Emily mentioned to me that shoulder-length hair was in style, so I told her to go for that because I am nothing if not trendy. I also showed her an inspiration picture that I found by searching for celebrities that I think have my face shape and hair similar to mine, like Kate Bosworth and Cameron Diaz.

    This was the final result:

Bad lighting, but you get the idea!

I like it! And what’s more important, so does David. In fact, he likes it so much that he told me he’s worried about me getting hit on all the time now. I asked him if that meant I wasn’t pretty before. He told me I was being ridiculous, but I thought it was a reasonable question. :)

Emily also gave me some tips on how to take care of my hair and style it. I’m horrible with this kind of stuff, so I soaked up her advice. She told me I really need to use a shampoo and conditioner for color-treated hair. Since I’m cheap, I asked her what brand to use that wasn’t “professional”. Her answer was anything by L’Oreal or TreSemme. Unfortunately, those brands don’t have color-treatment products (at least not at the store I was in) so I ended up buying a brand I know nothing about. Go me.

As for styling, she told me to put a little bit of gel in my hair when it’s damp, apply some uplifting foam to the roots on the crown of my head, and then blow-dry it using a round brush. That is something that I am very awkward at doing, but I guess it just takes practice.

Anyway! I’m very excited about my new hair. By the way, everyone should be so lucky to have a best friend who is also a licensed cosmetologist and an amazing one at that. If anyone out there has other tips for me about how to give my hair texture and body, including product recommendations, please send them my way. Currently my favorite style (other than ponytail) is to straighten my already-straight hair to make it look like I did it on purpose. I sort of fail at being a girl in this area, and I’m trying to remedy that!
