beautiful mess / amy johnson / second and edgemont

I’ve been somewhat sick this week and am running behind on things, so today I’m sharing some stuff I found around the internet. None of it is super recent but I liked it all enough to share. Enjoy!

    >I want to get my home to a place where even the messes are beautiful (see above photo by Amy Johnson; also read more of her beautiful blog).

    >Keeping this article in mind for the time when I need to start convincing my husband to have a third baby. ;)

    >I’m in love with this photo series. My parents always, always walk us to the car when we leave their house, and my mom always stands on the sidewalk waving until she can’t see our car anymore. Without fail.

    >Tips for cold weather running. I’ve run exactly once in cold weather so far and I was miserable since I wasn’t prepared. I’m not sure it’d be worth it to me to invest in the super nice gear, but maybe some cheaper versions. Good non-gear tips here too.

    >This is my dream cold-weather wardrobe. Seriously. I’m definitely going to use this as a reference and look for ethical versions of these items.

  • race recap : 2015 aramco houston half marathon

This past weekend was so crazy for me. It was Liam’s first birthday (and his party, which I will share more about soon) and my first half marathon. In addition I had a work dinner to attend and my niece’s 3rd birthday party, so all in all we had very little time at home. I overextended myself because I ended up catching a stomach bug on Sunday night, but thankfully the rest of the weekend went fairly well. Today I just want to recap how the race went!

Start time was 7:00 a.m. so my friends picked me up at 5:00 a.m. We got to the convention center in plenty of time with no stress and just got ourselves ready, went to the bathroom (twice) and checked our gear. There were 31,000 runners and it was just so busy.

I had been nervous leading up to the race and focused my nerves on being prepared with the right clothes and such. I ended up wearing a tank top with a very light long-sleeved shirt on top. It was around 41 degrees at the start but it warmed up to in the 60’s and I didn’t take a jacket, gloves, or ear warmer to the race. I was very happy with my clothes decisions, because after a few miles I just pushed up my sleeves and I was comfortable the rest of the race.

A little before 7 we walked to our assigned corral. My friend Joanna and I were in corral C – not the slowest! :) We didn’t end up crossing the start line until almost 17 minutes after the race had begun. Soooo many people!

I was ready to get running, but once we started I felt intimidated at how far we had to go. But the atmosphere was awesome; there were spectators for pretty much the entire course. After a couple of miles we were in a groove. I also started to feel like I had to pee again! Here’s the rundown of how it went:

Mile 3 – we drank some water, walked through it just long enough to drink.

Mile 5 – we sucked it up and used the port-a-potty. Felt much better, but I was bummed to stop because I had been feeling really good and it was hard to get going again.

Mile 5.5 – saw my friend Mandi who I used to play soccer with and who is now a super runner, but she just had a baby so was spectating. Gave her a quick hug. It really gave me a boost to see a familiar face.

Mile 6-7 – we walked through another water break and ate our energy chews. Around this time I started to feel some pain in my leg muscles and joints.

Mile 8 – the marathon runners split off and I was super glad I didn’t have to go all that way.

Mile 9 – saw my parents, my brother, and my sister-in-law. That was awesome! I think they took a video of me running but I haven’t seen it yet and I’m kind of afraid to. :) Another big boost of energy.

Mile 10 – my muscles were feeling pretty tight and I was pulling ahead of my running buddy a bit so I just went ahead. I realized it would be better to just go a little faster and get it done. It actually felt better on my legs.

Mile 10-11 – ran by a donut shop and it smelled soooo good. I don’t even like donuts all that much but I really wanted one.

Mile 11-12 – there was a gradual incline and it was really tough. The entire course up to this point had been flat so I can’t complain too much but it was hard to have it come at the end.

Mile 13 – leading up to the finish line the street was packed with spectators cheering and it was so exciting. I really pushed myself to keep a steady or faster pace toward the end and I felt I really finished strong. Me after I had just finished:

    Some thoughts:

    >The spectators helped a lot with morale. I liked it when kids were there giving high fives, seeing people’s dogs, and the creative signs. My favorites were “worst parade ever,” “run if you think I’m sexy,” and “run faster, the Kenyans are eating all the food.”

    >Couldn’t have asked for better weather.

    >I finished in 2 hours 18 minutes, which is about a 10:32 pace per mile. That was a lot faster than I ever do my long runs usually, so I was really happy.

    >Leading up to the race I had been considering taking on a full marathon in the future, but now I’m not so sure. It was pretty painful at the end and I was so glad to be done! I have another half marathon in a few weeks, but after that I’m going to stick to shorter distances for awhile.

    >As I mentioned I spent that night awake with a stomach bug. At first I thought it was because of the race but I actually think it was unrelated. The next day my muscles and joints were way less sore than I expected, I was just super weak and tired from being sick all night.

Overall it was an awesome experience and I feel such a sense of accomplishment. I never thought that I would be able to do something like this but now I see it just takes time and dedication, like so many other things. So glad to have this in the books!

week in the life 2014 : title page and monday / kapachino

Well two and a half months later and I’m finally putting together this album! Before I share more I have a few thoughts:

    >I love this project and definitely want to participate each year. I bought and used the kit, but had to put together my own album since they had sold out. This year I’m pretty sure I’m going to buy all of Ali’s kits and albums because I don’t have a huge stash of my own, I love her style, and having it on hand really helps me get it done.

    >I do hope that the official week in 2015 will be earlier in the year, because this was right before the holidays and there was just no way I could devote the time I needed to put the album together.

    >My three biggest sources of inspiration for the album are Ali herself, Jodie, and Andrea. If you felt like it you would be able to see where I’ve copied some of their ideas. :)

On to the album! Above you can see my title page. The front little card tells my “reason why.”

On the back of the card I used alpha stickers for our initials and typed out some info about each of us, plus what we’re into. I liked adding type to the album like this, but I didn’t have the time to keep it up so everything from here on out is pretty much hand written.

week in the life 2014 : monday in the album / kapachino

For the main title page I used a family photo from the week and stamped the dates on a label.

week in the life 2014 : monday in the album / kapachino

Now we get into Monday! I decided to use ALL black and white photos for this project. I thought that it would be easier to edit and keep it from feeling too busy. I planned to use more embellishments than usual to add color, but as it turns out I am who I am and the “extras” were kept to a minimum. In the future I think I’ll do color photos, but this was a fun experiment.

For the first photo of each day I printed a 6×8 (using Persnickety Prints) and added a label with the date. I think it’s fitting that the first photo of anything turned out to be coffee.

On the right side of the page are some morning photos.

On the left are more morning photos. I didn’t try to add too much journaling because I wrote everything out at the end (you’ll see).

On the right is a 3×8 insert where I put pics of two of my meals and wrote what we ate.

Behind the insert are photos of the kids at daycare dropoff, a filler card I created, and I stapled the chipboard 1 right onto the page protector.

On the left: my work station at the time, getting pulled over (yikes), to do list.

On the right: daily gratitude list (want to include this for each day), Liam at a checkup, the weather, and a Monday filler card.

On the left: David being funny with Meredith after work, favorite moments card + filler, David nebulizing Liam (thank goodness we don’t have to do that every day anymore!).

On the right: David giving Meredith a bath, Meredith doing puzzles, a 4×6 filler card I created using VersaMark stamping.

week in the life 2014 : monday in the album / kapachino

This is the last spread for Monday. I wrote out two of Meredith’s quotes for the day and put a picture of us right before bed. Then I wrote out ALL of my notes for the day and they fit perfectly on a 6×8 blank sheet of cardstock. I did this for each day. I tried underlining it for Monday but the rest of the days I left plain because I liked that look better.

I will post each day as I get it done!

  • 2015 reading plans and goals

    2015 reading plans and goals

I feel like I’ve been talking a lot about plans and goals lately. I guess that’s normal around this time of year, so just call me cliché! I’m not done yet, either, so I hope you like this kind of thing. (Personally, I could read about other people’s goals and plans alllll day long, ha.)

I want to read more this year. Last year I read 20 books which was a huge drop for me. Obviously it was a year of adjustment and that’s fine, but I’d still like to read more. I intend to do monthly book reports this year and hopefully there will be at least three books on each one. Here’s what I’m thinking:

Reading challenge: First of all, I’ve decided to play along with the Modern Mrs. Darcy reading challenge, which has twelve categories to fill. It’s flexible and low stress and just fun. I will update my progress on this every monthly book report.

Book clubs: I have a monthly in-person book club that I attend, and I usually read every book unless it’s just not worth it to me (see: The Ground Beneath Her Feet by Salmon Rusdie). The postal book club is finishing up its first round this month, and there will be six rounds of it this year, so I definitely plan to read all of those.

Library: For reading of-the-moment books that I’m really interested in, I’ll be using the library. I’ve used it for ages for book club, but I just recently started placing holds on popular books that I have to wait awhile for. This led to the discovery that having that return date as a deadline is a big incentive for me, especially when I can’t renew it because it’s requested already.

Audiobooks: I basically quit listening to audiobooks once my commute was drastically shortened, and I’ve been listening to podcasts instead. But I do own some audiobooks that I’d like to listen to, so my plan is to listen to one and then catch up on all my podcasts, then listen to another. Not sure if I’ll be able to keep up, but I’ll try.

Book choice: Along with my word for the year – light – I think I will aim for more lighthearted books this year. Or at least books that are fast and absorbing. This probably isn’t the year I will tackle a large classic, anything epic or dense. I also for sure plan to abandon a book if I’m not caught up in it by the first 50 pages or so.

The natural next question is where I will find time to read, but I don’t think that will really be a problem. I’ll make it happen if I want to. Even though I am super busy, there is always still time that is wasted on dumb things, and if I’m reading lighthearted books then reading can become my go-to relaxing activity.

What are your reading plans for the year?

  • currently

    january kids

starting a monthly photo series of the kids to serve as title cards in this year’s Project Life using these templates from Paislee Press.

enjoying the extra time at home I’ve had this week due to Liam’s most recent illness (virus turned secondary bacterial sinus infection).

putting the last of the Christmas decorations away.

attempting to unsubscribe from the Madewell newsletter, because they send promotions every day and I’ve been unable to keep myself from buying these and these (but my unsubscribe attempts don’t work for some reason).

    drinking cafe mochas.

researching what to make with fresh lemons since my  neighbor gave me a bunch she cut from her tree (thinking about trying this).

planning Liam’s birthday party which is in just over a week and thinking: brunch with donuts, bright colors, pocket page scrapbook, easy kids’ activities like blocks and coloring.

anticipating my first half marathon in nine days even though my longest run has only been ten miles.

reading Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel and loving it.

    playing Trivia Crack.

    feeling really, really good.
