  • fighting the sadness

The only good thing about getting so sick for a couple of days is that it completely took my mind off anything else that was wrong. For a little while, I wasn’t sad or emotional – every part of me was focused on feeling better. And now that I do, physically (although I’m still barely eating), I can start to feel my crazy hormones take over again. The sadness creeps in subtly and slowly, and today I began to feel its fuzzy tentacles wrapping around my heart. I decided that I didn’t want to just accept that, so I took action.

First, I made an appointment for a pedicure this weekend. It helps me to have something to look forward to in the immediate future, no matter how small. Next I got myself out of the house and visited my sister-in-law and my nephew because sitting at home alone just makes things worse, no matter how comfortable my bed is. Finally, I stopped at a place that always makes me happy: Target.

I had a $100 gift card from my birthday and I figured today was the day to use it. A hundred dollars is very easy to spend at Target, especially when it’s not your own money. But here is what I came away with:

The placemats and napkins are for making my tiny kitchen table look pretty (here’s hoping I will get back to cooking someday soon), the tea kettle is for making coffee with my french press (whenever I can tolerate coffee again), the basket is to hold throw blankets and to match another one we have, and the sandals are for looking cute (although not in that picture – but hopefully they will with a dress and once I’ve had the aforementioned pedicure).

So far, so good. I haven’t cried once today, which I’m pretty proud of. And I’m about to eat my first real meal in three days: baked potato soup in a bread bowl from Panera. I have one more day off work to relax, and then we’ll see how I handle Thursday. I know it may take awhile, but I want to be happy again, and I’m willing to fight for it.

  • Friday Mash-Up

Some randomness for your reading pleasure:

One of my very best friends, Megan, is somewhat new to blogging. Well, the truth is that she blogged sporadically for awhile, and then stopped updating. So I took her off my list of links, which apparently offended motivated her. After some hearty encouragement on my part, she took it up again. She has assured me that she will be updating frequently, and she is a woman of her word. Basically what I’m trying to say is that YOU SHOULD BE READING IT. I don’t encourage just anyone to blog. Megan is a better writer than I’ll ever be; at once witty, inspiring, thought-provoking, and hilarious. She and her husband are currently living in Scotland for the year, and they are recounting their adventures here. Megan also has a travel blog, where she is retroactively writing about her journeys across the world.

You may or may not know that my youngest brother works stage crew for the Alley Theatre, which is one of Houston’s premier theatres. This is awesome because it means that we get to see most of the plays for free, and the others at a discounted price. I feel very cultured. Anyway, this week we saw the world premiere of Gruesome Playground Injuries with Brad Fleischer and Selma Blair (you may recognize her from Legally Blonde, the Hellboy movies, or Cruel Intentions). Both David and I liked it a lot, which is actually rare. I even heard David laughing several times. Afterwards we got to meet the cast, which was fun because the most famous person I have ever met up until now was Derek Webb (and I was too nervous to even say anything to him).

One of my coworkers introduced me to the website mygrocerydeals.com. It basically has all of your local grocery store sale flyers in one place, and it will e-mail you when a new one is available. You can browse by store or by category, create a shopping list, and print it or e-mail it to yourself. I love it and it has already revolutionized the way I shop.

I got the H1N1 vaccine today. I did it because I am a direct caregiver to many people who are at high risk for contracting the virus; people who, if they got it, would get very very sick and perhaps not make it through. So the vaccine is more to protect them than to protect myself, because I know that my body could handle any kind of flu. I have to say though, I was nervous. For some reason my old fear of needles came back to me, and I was not feeling up to getting stuck. I think it’s because I’ve given two intramuscular injections this week, and both times I’ve seen the muscle quiver. It kind of gave me the shivers. Anyway, I looked away and barely felt the needlestick, although my arm is quite sore now.

I wrote most of this post early in the day, then forgot to finish it until now. I almost went to bed without posting it, and now I’m barely squeezing it in. I’m super tired. Good night!

Today is not a good day for blogging. So here, look at some things on my Christmas wish list!

The one I use now is plain white. Or, plain white with some stains on it. Either way, not cute.

See you tomorrow, folks. Maybe I’ll have something to say.

  • Some Things I Bought

I decided to go on a random mini shopping trip after work last night and this is what I picked up:

    purchase

    1. Bath & Body Works foaming hand soap – I love foaming soaps. They make it so much easier to wash my hands. And I love these scents: Wild honeysuckle, sea island cotton, and rainkissed leaves. Only $3 each right now!

    2. C.O. Bigelow everyday lip balm – I was in the market for a new petroleum based lip balm, and this looked like as good as any. $5, and so far I really like it.

    3. Scentport home fragrance diffuser – Picked this up because it was on sale for $4, and who doesn’t love a fresh linen smell to their room?

    4. White ceramic shell – I was browsing TJ Maxx, and thought that this would be a perfect place for us to collect our change. For $10 we have a cute little decoration that is now the centerpiece to our new kitchen table, and hopefully it will be the end of me finding change all over the house (a girl can wish)!

    5. Nike swim cap and goggles – I hate the goggles that I’ve been using, and have been really wanting a smaller, less bulky pair. I’ve never tried a swim cap before, but I think it’ll make things a lot easier. (Speaking of swimming, I swam the entire race length – 750 m – freestyle, without stopping, this week for the first time! I was very proud of myself.)

    6. Pedometer – I’m going to start wearing this at work. I know I must walk miles during the day, and I want to prove it!

    7. Target woven mirror – This was a bit of a splurge at $60, but I’ve been stalking it for weeks (I’ve actually visited it several times at the store before this) and it will look so great leaning on our mantle once we paint the fireplace white!

I haven’t shopped in awhile and this was a spur-of-the-moment trip, so it made me happy. :)
