I haven’t done anything with my hair for awhile, and it’s definitely been getting on my nerves. My personal hair stylist also happens to be one of my best friends, Emily. She just had a baby on September 12 so I wasn’t sure if she’d be up to doing my hair yet, but I figured I’d ask. (I also wanted an excuse to come see her little boy.) I was so excited that she said yes!
Before I left, I took some pictures of my hair. This is the best one (it’s hard to take good pictures of yourself; at least it is for me):
My hair is straight, extremely fine, and doesn’t hold much of a curl. It’s always hard for me to pick a cut that I think will work with it and look good with my face shape. I also knew that I wanted to change the color. It’s fall now, time to darken it up!
I asked Emily to make it noticeably darker but not shockingly so. She did a great job interpreting my vague wishes, and even left some of my dark blonde in there to blend the new color.
Once my hair was colored and washed it was time for a cut. Emily mentioned to me that shoulder-length hair was in style, so I told her to go for that because I am nothing if not trendy. I also showed her an inspiration picture that I found by searching for celebrities that I think have my face shape and hair similar to mine, like Kate Bosworth and Cameron Diaz.
This was the final result:
Bad lighting, but you get the idea!
I like it! And what’s more important, so does David. In fact, he likes it so much that he told me he’s worried about me getting hit on all the time now. I asked him if that meant I wasn’t pretty before. He told me I was being ridiculous, but I thought it was a reasonable question. :)
Emily also gave me some tips on how to take care of my hair and style it. I’m horrible with this kind of stuff, so I soaked up her advice. She told me I really need to use a shampoo and conditioner for color-treated hair. Since I’m cheap, I asked her what brand to use that wasn’t “professional”. Her answer was anything by L’Oreal or TreSemme. Unfortunately, those brands don’t have color-treatment products (at least not at the store I was in) so I ended up buying a brand I know nothing about. Go me.
As for styling, she told me to put a little bit of gel in my hair when it’s damp, apply some uplifting foam to the roots on the crown of my head, and then blow-dry it using a round brush. That is something that I am very awkward at doing, but I guess it just takes practice.
Anyway! I’m very excited about my new hair. By the way, everyone should be so lucky to have a best friend who is also a licensed cosmetologist and an amazing one at that. If anyone out there has other tips for me about how to give my hair texture and body, including product recommendations, please send them my way. Currently my favorite style (other than ponytail) is to straighten my already-straight hair to make it look like I did it on purpose. I sort of fail at being a girl in this area, and I’m trying to remedy that!
From Cio:
looks great!
From Scott:
Sorry Kathleen, I don’t share my secrets for getting hair full of texture and body.
From mediumcrazy:
It looks so good! I think she interpreted your color request perfectly…very flattering.
I don’t know if anyone is curling their hair much right now, but I’m just going to throw this out there…My hair is exactly like yours, super straight and I could never curl it with much success. Then my hairdresser told me it was all about the curling iron and I invested in a “Hot Tools Professional” curling iron…and it’s insane, it totally curls my hair and stays in magically all day. Something to possibly ask for for Christmas, just saying. :)
From Julienne:
I love Infusium shampoo! It smells delicious, and the smell lasts all day. Alex is always saying how good my hair smells. I also may have taken that exact same picture to my hair guy the last time I had it cut (now I’m in the process of growing it out). Alex says it’s fun to have a change in my hair because it makes him feel like I’m a totally different person – that part makes me laugh.
From Krista:
Oh la la! I love it! I’m inspired to get my hair done now!
From Chelsea:
I LOVE it!! You look great!
From MagsMac:
I LOVE IT!! It looks amazing :)
From SoMi's Nilsa:
First, I love the new color. It’s so rich without being too dark. Our hair is the most opposite possible … I’ve got unruly, thick and curly hair. But, I’ve used Infusium products in the past and really liked them. Hope this one does the trick for you!
From DeMo:
Very cute! I just got my hair cut yesterday. Mine is super thick and holds shape pretty well, so I don’t have much advice for you in that area except to say that you’ll get the hang of blow drying your hair! (funny thought: I have noticed that even though I’m right-handed, my left hand does all the work with the brush, and my right hand uses the dryer. It’s pretty funny b/c my left hand is good at nothing else. )
From Ro Manalo:
You look awesome! :)
From Emily A.:
DeMo said something about her hand that she writes with being the one that she uses the blow dryer with. It may seem weird but that is the correct way to do it. I am left-handed and my left hand holds the blow dryer and my right hand does the round brush.
Someone also mentioned a curling iron which can work it is just matters if you feel like taking the time to do it or not. You can go to Sally’s and buy a Gold n’ Hot and those work very well too if you want to buy a curling iron.
I am so excited that not only did you like your hair AND David liked your hair but I ALSO made it on your blog! Yay!
The last thing I have to say is that I think if is unfair for Scott to withhold his hair secrets especially since he is related to you by law now! :)
From Emily A.:
Wow, sorry for all the puncuation errors. I reread my comment and I wish there was an edit option… :)
From kait:
You’ve officially inspired me to go dark professionally. You look AMAZING.
From kapachino:
Thanks for the compliments, everyone! You made my day (and I hope Emily’s, too)!
From Lauren From Texas:
I know I already emailed you about this, but you look AMAZING!!
From Mom:
I really like your new haircut. And the color looks really great! I like the way Emily used your own hair color to give depth to the new color. EMILY is AMAZING! Everyone should get her to do their hair! I’ve also used Infusium and been pleased with it. It used to be the “gourmet” yet affordable shampoo several years ago.
From Megan:
1. I can’t believe you baited us with the Emily-just-had-a-baby thing and then neither included pictures of her beautifulness or her baby’s. Come on, Kat.
2. I can’t believe David thinks for a minute that a brunette would get hit on more frequently than a blond. We get them with the wit. THE WIT, DAVID!
3. You look great. But… you always do. Seriously.
From Christine:
I think it looks great! She did a good job!
It’s good to know that I am not the only person who has NO idea how to style hair. I’m pretty boring and lazy when it comes to doing my hair, so my style doesn’t change much.
From Carmen:
:) I Iike it!
From Hannah:
Kathleen your hair looks so good! I love it. It’s different but natural at the same time. So pretty : )
