  • natural personal care products

This post has been in the works for literally years, starting with way back when I decided to switch all my personal care products to natural versions. It’s been a super long process because first I used up what I had, and then whenever I would try a new brand if I didn’t love it I would still use it up before trying something new. Finally I’ve come to a place that I’m pretty happy with, although I’m sure I will still try new things (and update as I go).

So as I’m choosing products what I think about is:

    1) Is it natural and safe? There are some brands that I trust (you’ll notice several) but I also use the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep cosmetics database. I try to choose products that are in the 0-2 range on their website, but in a couple cases I went with a 3 because I loved the product and it was just fragrance or something like that bumping it up. Also, not everything is in the database so then I have to check ingredients.

    2) What’s the price? There are some awesome natural products out there but they can get super expensive. I’m on a budget so I’ve been trying the cheapest stuff that fits my other criteria.

    3) Where can I get it? I know ordering stuff online is pretty easy but I like to be able to go to a physical store that is close by and pick something up if I need it. I get most of my stuff from Target, Whole Foods, HEB (a local grocery store), or Ulta.

    4) Does it work and how do I like it? This is where I evaluate the product for itself, how it works, do I like how it smells, do I have any problems with it, etc. It helps that I have normal skin with no special issues so most products work on me pretty well.

Okay let’s get to it: this is what I’m using now!

    Face

    face collage

CleanserAvalon Organics Vitamin C Renewal Cleansing Milk. This has been a favorite for years. It works well to remove eye makeup and I love the pump dispenser and citrus smell.

Exfoliator : Mineral Fusion Facial Scrub. I use this about once a week. I used to be so bad about remembering it but then I started keeping it in the shower and it’s much easier to grab and use that way.

MoisturizerAvalon Organics Lavender Luminosity Daily Moisturizer. I actually prefer the Vitamin C version because of the scent (I adore citrus), but the lavender has a better rating.

Eye creamBareMinerals Firming Eye Cream. Do I notice a difference when I use eye cream? Not really yet, but I’m in my 30’s now so it’s pretty widely recommended. I admit that I skip it a lot though.

    Makeup

    makeup collage_edited-1

Facial sunscreen : Mineral Fusion Brush On Sun Defense. This is a little extra sun protection for everyday wear (i.e. when I’m mostly inside) since I have fair skin. I love how easy it is to apply. I’m still looking for a favorite stronger sunscreen for when I’m outdoors a lot.

Foundation : BareMinerals Pressed Powder. (Mineral Fusion also has a good one, but I find the compact really hard to open.) I love mineral powder foundation because, as you can probably tell, I go really light on the makeup anyway and this evens out my skin tone while still looking natural. I’ve tried the loose powder version and it’s just a little too messy for my liking.

Blush : BareMinerals READY. I think I try a new color every time I get one and they’ve all been good. I use this lightly though. Again, the pressed version is just easier than the loose kind. I use this brush to apply it.

Concealer : BareMinerals powder (and I use this brush to apply it). I don’t use this very often but it’s pretty effective in dealing with mild red spots and blemishes. I’m still on the hunt for a natural cream concealer for when I get a bad blemish.

Mascara : Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes!. I have tried SO many natural brands of mascara, hoping to find a cheaper one, but I keep coming back to this. From what I’ve tried, it’s the best all around.

    Hair, body, and miscellaneous

    hair and body collage

Shampoo : For my kids I use The Honest Company (it’s in my favorite orange vanilla scent) and I use it sometimes as well. Most of the time I use Nature’s Gate (note the price in that link is for a pack of 4). It lasts a really long time.

Conditioner : I don’t use conventional conditioner anymore, but I love the The Honest Company’s Conditioning Detangler spray. Smells and works great, and Meredith loves me to spray her hair too.

Lip balm : I can’t stand dry lips. I’ve actually found that Lanolin – which I had on hand from breastfeeding but hardly ever needed for that purpose – works amazingly well for this, which makes sense. And I usually only need to apply it once a day. I also love Pacifica Lip Tint for a hint of color.

Deodorant : I was so resistant to giving up my antiperspirant! I hate to sweat, but that stuff is so not good for our bodies. I tried several brands and so far my favorite is Kiss My Face Active Life. I have to be honest though, there was a big transition period where my body adjusted to operating without antiperspirant. I’ve gotten to a good place, but it’s been a combination of giving it time to adjust and getting used to sweating a little. If I work out, I’m still going to sweat. If I’m outside during the summer for long, I’ll still sweat. That’s the reality of going without antiperspirant. But at least I doesn’t smell bad. :)

Toothpaste : I do like Tom’s of Maine and it was my go-to until I started having trouble finding this SLS-free version. (SLS is linked with mouth sores, which I deal with from time to time.) Some stores also only carry it in peppermint, which I hate. So I started ordering toothpaste from The Honest Company as well, and I think I’ll probably stick with that. I love their kids’ version too.

By the way, if you can’t tell, I love The Honest Company. I used their diapers for Liam before we switched to cloth, and now I get their essentials bundle. It’s awesome because you don’t have to get it every month, but only when you want it. I usually order one every 3-4 months and get the stuff that I’ve run out of. If you want to try it, I’d be grateful if you used my referral link to sign up.

    body and misc collage

Bar soap : Actually, the soap I use is handmade by the daughter of one of my patients. I’m obsessed with it. But since she doesn’t ship yet, I will also say that I tried and love Zum Bar as well.

Body lotion : This is one product that I still want to experiment with, but I do like Kiss My Face Vitamin A & E Moisturizer. I really want to find a citrus scented lotion though. This one is kind of an almond/earthy/milky smell which is fine but not my favorite.

Menstrual care : Getting real here for a minute! Thankfully I haven’t needed this much at all in the last several years (thanks kids!) but I switched to the DivaCup and never looked back. If you are curious about it I’d direct you to this blog post. I also switched to cloth pantyliners (mine are by Charlie Banana) for the light days when using the DivaCup isn’t necessary.

Okay, whew! I think that’s pretty much everything I use! I know there are a lot of ways to make your own products as well, but I’m a working mama who would rather spend my spare time in other ways, and I’m dubious as to whether I could make anything that would compare to this. I do, however, want to make my own household cleaning products, and that’s my next venture!

Please share with me if you have any natural products that you love, I want to try them!

Today I’m sharing some stuff I found around the internet. Enjoy!

    >On chasing achievement.

    >If you’re looking for something to do with your kids at home this summer, I highly recommend you check out Janssen’s “summer unplugged” series. Each week has a different theme including books, crafts, activities, and recipes.

    >I’m pretty excited about the new app Party Party from the girls at A Beautiful Mess and I downloaded it the day it was available. We don’t have a good photobooth in our area so I’m excited to try some fun projects with this!

    >White potatoes are now whole30 approved! (But not chips or fries.) I’m kinda mad they are just making this announcement when I did without them during mine. I think that would have really helped me as far as breastfeeding is concerned.

    >This colorful car wash looks like such a fun kid activity!

    >Paislee Press is a favorite digital designer of mine. I was looking through the shop and discovered a bunch of free downloads! Check out the photobooth strip diy, designing a photobook, and 4×6 photo templates volume 1 and volume 2.

    >Seven things you can control in life.

I’ve been home sick for Liam and myself all week because of a fevery virus, but we were finally able to return to school/work today, yay! Just in time for the weekend! I do still have a headache that hasn’t gone away for four days, so I’m currently trying to manage that, figure out its cause, and possibly see a doctor if needed. Hoping it just goes away soon though! Have a great weekend all!

  • whole30 afterthoughts

Today I’m going to share with you the results of my whole30 experiment, plus a bunch of other thoughts and things I learned along the way. I hope that this will encourage anyone who is thinking about it to consider giving it a try! And if you are planning your first whole30 and, like I was, are searching online for success stories and tips, I urge you to reach out to me and I will help as best I can! I want you to know up front that it was definitely not as scary or as hard as I expected it to be. Now for the rundown!

What my life used to be like:

So, I wasn’t a total mess. I didn’t have medical conditions or a lot of pain or anything like that. I also wasn’t really “overweight,” but I was about 10-15 pounds above what I consider to be my personal ideal weight, and what I weighed for many years prior to having kids. I didn’t hate my body but I could no longer fit into many of my clothes, which bothered me. I got headaches on a weekly basis and an energy slump every afternoon. Before bed each night I was just completely drained.

The way I was eating was out of control, and I knew it. During pregnancy and for many months afterward I ate whatever I wanted. That included a LOT of sweets. We are talking multiple per day. My meals also consisted of a lot of carbs and my veggies were limited. A typical day would start with coffee (+ cream and a bunch of sugar) and refrigerator oatmeal. I might have a snack of a granola bar or pretzels midmorning. For lunch I’d have leftovers, maybe something like spaghetti (or if no leftovers I’d have a sandwich), along with yogurt and fruit. As soon as I got home from work I’d look for a snack and if there was any chocolate to be found I’d eat it. Dinner was something easy and cheap – tacos, spaghetti, burgers, etc. – and we might have some fruit along with it but almost never a vegetable unless our parents were cooking for us. Thankfully I don’t drink soda, but I frequently enjoyed mochas from Starbucks.

I knew this way of eating was terrible for me and I could see myself continuing to gain weight unless I took action. I tried limiting my desserts to two a week, but I had a hard time with the indecision and didn’t really have any accountability. I tried counting calories, and those two things did help me lose a few pounds but I could tell I was still very much addicted to sugar.

    How I found the Whole30:

I had heard of the whole30 off and on over the years through different blogs, but I was never in a place where I was mentally ready to take it on. In fact I would just glaze over it and think to myself that I’d never be able to do something like that. I don’t know what happened this time, but I had been thinking a lot about my health. I had begun running again, and the way I was eating was just weighing on me, yet I couldn’t seem to stop myself. Then I read this blog post and all of a sudden I was interested. I even bought the book It Starts With Food and as soon as I read the first few chapters I was sold.

    During my Whole30 experience:

You can read my food diary updates, as well as how I felt each day here: week one / week two / week three / week 4. Basically though, the first couple weeks had some ups and downs, but the last two weeks were pretty much amazing. Although there was a lot of planning and prep at the beginning, I used the adrenaline of starting something new to get me through that. Then, because I was committed, I was able to make it through the day 10-12 slump and soon enough it was becoming second nature to me. Let me cover some details.

    Favorite meals:

    >My fried egg breakfasts with banana + fruit mix. I am planning on continuing to eat them as-is.

    >Salads. Basically any kind: with taco meat, ground turkey + apples, shredded chicken, just strawberries, just tomatoes. Olive oil + balsamic vinegar (or a flavored balsamic like raspberry) is all the dressing I need, truly.

    >Italian chicken

    >Moroccan chicken

    >Steak

    >Baked chicken tenders

    What I missed:

    >Dark chocolate. No amount of detoxing will kill my love for it.

    >Coffee with cream + a little sugar. I still don’t love black coffee.

    >Ice cream. I missed it more than any other treat, which surprised me. Maybe because it’s so hot outside.

    >Socializing over food. July 4th was the HARDEST day for me by far. It was the only day we had a really big family gathering and all the typical summery foods were there in abundance and I could hardly have any of it. I also only went out to eat twice the entire time because there is so little I could have at most restaurants.

    >Variety. I did learn to love many of the compliant meals, but sometimes I just wanted a little something different.

    What I didn’t miss:

    >Cheese. I thought this would be one of the harder things to give up! But no, I barely thought about it.

    >Most grains. I love having eggs rather than oatmeal or bagels in the morning now. And for the most part I could really live without bread.

    >A lot of things I just felt indifferent about. I didn’t particularly find myself fantasizing about yogurt or beans, but they are two things that I am planning on incorporating into my new diet for variety.

    New foods I’ve fallen for:

    >Broccoli. I liked it okay before, but now I’m obsessed.

    >Coconut oil. It’s so good and healthy for cooking!

    >Plain, cold-brewed coffee. I actually prefer it with coconut milk! Although I wouldn’t mind a little flavor to it, when I tried it sweetened it was too much for me.

    >Steak. I can’t believe I used to claim to not like it!

    >Salads as a meal. They never “counted” for me before, but now they are a go-to.

    What I learned:

    >How to cook fresh vegetables. Game changer.

    >How to chop produce correctly. Anytime I had to prepare something for the first time I watched a “how to” YouTube video.

    >That avocados don’t agree with me. I don’t like their taste, and they leave my stomach churning. It’s too bad, because they are a great healthy source of fat.

    >To throw basically any kind of leftover meat & veggies or fruit on a salad, drizzle some olive oil + vinegar on top, and you have an easy, yummy meal.

    >Sugar is in EVERYTHING.

    >Broiling is not scary, it is super easy and awesome! I had never used the broiler on my oven before.

    What went well:

I finished! I made it through all thirty days with no slips or cheats. I didn’t have any sugar cravings. I learned a lot about cooking and feeding my family healthy meals. Meredith’s sugar intake at home has also reduced dramatically. By the end I was able to throw together meals pretty easily without a lot of stress or preparation. I had the support of everyone around me and even encouraged several people to try their own whole30.

    What could have gone better:

I ate a lot of fruit. More than was probably best. I have always been a fruit lover and I just let myself go in that area. I also allowed myself to snack since I am still exclusively breastfeeding, even though it was “healthy” snacking of nuts, dried fruit, and Larabars. Speaking of breastfeeding, my pumping output did decrease. Not dramatically, but noticeably. I don’t think I was able to eat enough carbs since I don’t like starchy veggies like sweet potato and squash. (Side note: white potatoes are now whole30 compliant! Not chips or fries though. That would have helped me, I think, but the announcement was just made last week.)

Now that I’ve finished my Whole30 experience:

Here is the best part. By the end of my thirty days I was feeling amazing!! No more headaches. Constant energy all day long with no crashes. Happy all the time. One week in and I could already fit in my pre-pregnancy clothes, and by the end they were even a little loose. Do you want to talk numbers? Okay!

    Weight lost: 9 pounds

    Inches lost:

    • arms – 0.25″
    • thighs – 1.25″
    • hips – 2.25″
    • waist – 1.5″
    • tummy – 2.25″

I decided to remove the before & after photos for modesty’s sake but email me if you’re really curious. I am definitely leaner, especially in my tummy, where my constant bloat and pooch are drastically reduced.

Since I finished whole30 a week ago I have followed the reintroduction schedule decently (although I haven’t been perfect by any means. I made cookies to boost lactation & have eaten too many of them. They worked though; just in time for Liam to catch a virus and cut way back on his nursing!). So far, this is what I’m thinking regarding the foods I’ve tried:

    • Dairy: a little bit is fine, and I will probably keep having some cheese every now & then and cream in my coffee. Ice cream, though delicious, really bloats me so I will only indulge every once in awhile.
    • Gluten: I’m more irritable when I’m eating a lot of gluten. I am also not sure, but it may be contributing to my headaches. This week I caught Liam’s virus and a terrible, constant headache has gone along with it, so I am not sure what is really the causing factor there. But I definitely want to limit.
    • Other grains: I seem to be able to handle them well physically, but I still plan to limit them overall. (We are talking oats, rice, corn, etc.)
    • Legumes: I actually haven’t really tried these yet. I suppose since I don’t miss them too much I’ll continue to limit them. I’m sure I’ll have beans every once in awhile though unless they do make me feel horrible when I get around to trying them.

So I am going to try my best to keep a clean diet. It won’t be totally paleo, but that will be my standard to return to if I notice things slippling. As far as sweets go, I’ll allow myself to have dark chocolate in moderation, and then if I want to splurge on a really delicious or really meaningful dessert, I will do so with no guilt, shame, or regrets.

This has also really gotten the ball rolling as far as healthy living, and I am excited to start my half marathon training at the beginning of August. Now that I have leaned out I want to get stronger and more in shape physically!

So, that’s my whole30 experience! Let me know in the comments if you have any more questions and I’ll be happy to answer. For anyone who encouraged me along the way: thank you!! It meant so much to me! And thanks for following me through this!

  • my summer capsule wardrobe

I’ve been mentioning that I’m in the process of determining my personal style and putting together capsule wardrobes for each season. Recently I was able to purchase some sorely needed summer items, and as of now I feel pretty good about what I have. The following clothes are what I’m wearing almost exclusively, apart from a few items that I have in duplicate colors.

    summer capsule wardrobe shirts

black pullover / black striped shirt (maternity from Ross)

baseball tee (Gap, in stores) / gray striped shirt (Gap, in stores) / gray sleeveless henley

white shirt (Gap, in stores) / cream tank / black & cream striped shirt (maternity from Ross)

army green open tee (old from Target) / green v-neck / flowered shirt (maternity from Ross)

chambray button-down / blue tank (Gap, in stores) / blue & gray striped pullover

You’ll notice I have a lot of stuff from Gap. They have great neutral basics that fit me well so I just go with it. I also tried to buy some maternity shirts that would transition past pregnancy and I got a few that work.

    summer capsule wardrobe bottoms

black dress (THML Clothing, from Stitch Fix)/ gray striped maxi skirt (Ross)

white pants (Banana Republic, old)/ skinny jeans / cutoff jean shorts (old Gap jeans that I literally cut off)

black shorts (Banana Republic, old) / skinny bermuda jean shorts (light wash in stores) / gray linen roll-up shorts (Gap, in stores)

To church I wear the dress, skirt, or white pants (and btw those don’t look like much in this photo, but they are super flattering). Most of the time I have on shorts because it is insanely hot. I don’t wear jeans much in the summer but they come in handy sometimes. Wearing scrubs to work everyday does have its advantages.

    summer capsule wardrobe shoes

    Rainbow sandals / black Tevas

white sandals(mine are similar) / brown gladiator sandals

    black Toms / gray sneakers

I could definitely get by without much trouble with these pieces, but there are a few more that I’d like to add eventually. A couple more casual dresses, a graphic tee, some kind of vest, a light wash chambray shirt (short sleeved), some kind of clog sandal, and maybe some versatile flats. But really, this is it!

I think this capsule wardrobe should last me well past the technical beginning of autumn because of our climate. In fact, I may only need three capsules: summer, transition, and winter. “Winter” is relative, of course, and will encompass the colder days of autumn as well. “Transition” would most likely just add some boots and layers, and replace some of the shorts with jeans & pants. I’ll have to think about it.

What are your go-to items of clothing for summer?
