  • eating nook

This is the first area of the house that I’m calling “done.” It’s actually the only place we eat in the whole house because we don’t have a traditional dining room right now. I scoured deep into the archives of my photos to find a “before” picture for you. Here it is when we moved in:

    breakfast room before

There was a lot of wood. The paneling extends to the entire living room as well. A funky light fixture. Pinkish cream paint. Cheap blinds.

    Here it is now:

    breakfast room

The first big project we did in our house was to have the paneling professionally painted. Back then I was obsessed with this green color. I still like it, but now I am kind of itching for a change. It’s such a huge undertaking though, so it probably won’t get done for a long time.

    breakfast room

One of the things I knew needed to be done was to switch out what was on the wall, and I finally did that recently.

    breakfast room table

I have a special love for this table. Other than our bed, it was the first piece of furniture we bought for this house. I found it in a local antique store, and although I think it annoys David because it’s a little wobbly and has scratches all over it, I think it’s beautiful.

    breakfast room table

The chairs are from IKEA and the cushions are Target. I would love to do a mix of vintage chairs, but that’s the kind of thing that you have to put together over time and these are sturdy and comfortable and I still like them well enough.

    breakfast table top

Since I knew I wanted to keep this area simple – it’s not very big after all – the last thing I had to do was finish off the table top. My original idea was to put down a pretty vintage tray with a wire basket for napkins and a vase of flowers. I still love that idea, but I couldn’t find the exact tray I had in mind, and anyway I thought it would be smarter to use what I already have. So I just used these placemats as a base and stacked the napkins. This is how I leave it when it’s not in use, then when we eat I just push the vase to the side and pull out the placemats and napkins.

    vase

Lastly, I used this gorgeous vase that was my grandmother’s and that I recently found while “shopping” in my parents’ garage. And instead of buying flowers, I clipped these pretty branches from a huge overgrown bush in our backyard. When these die I will just clip some more branches. So pretty and so free!

I admit that it’s a bit green overload here, and I wouldn’t mind bringing in some different colors, so I’m on the lookout for more cloth napkins to mix in and of course I can always splurge on flowers. I am also thinking of getting a different color chair cushions. Any thoughts on colors for those? (Okay, now it’s sounding like the room isn’t so “done” but really, I’m happy with it and feel good about moving on for now!)

Oh, and if you’re wondering, which you probably aren’t, I went ahead and took down our high chair because Meredith refuses to use it anymore. Most of the time she just sits on my lap, which can be annoying but I know I will miss it one day.

It feels so good to actually get one space finished!

  • project life 2013 : week 14

Week 14, April 1-7. Still love this project!

    DSCF4212

I pretty much just had photos from two events: my brother, his wife, and their niece Stella came over for a playdate one evening, and on the weekend we visited a local wildlife refuge. The one other picture, of Meredith in the stroller, came from my mom who took her to the dog park one day.

I thought about combining this week with the next, but since that was my vacation week I knew I’d have plenty of photos from that to stand on its own and I didn’t want to cram. So I looked for ways to fill the pockets.

    DSCF4213

On the left I included my April goals, which I’m doing every month, a journaling card about the play date, and an incident report form from daycare.

    DSCF4214

    DSCF4215

On the right I journaled about our trip to the refuge, included the April calendar card, a quote from Meredith, a card I got in the mail, and another “week in review” card to write about other things that happened.

    DSCF4216

    DSCF4219

I like these quote cards for recording new things Meredith is learning to say.

    DSCF4217

The card was from a VP at the hospital where I work because I caught a potential medication error and reported it. Pretty cool to get a handwritten note like this.

The “week in review” card is a staple for me. I do them lots of different ways but they’re perfect for writing about little things that don’t warrant a photo or a card of their own.

On to the next! I’m on the verge of getting behind again so this weekend I have some work to do. :)

  • my vision for our house

I have a vision for our house. Even though we’ve lived here five years there is still a lot that needs to be done. My vision is to keep things simple but comfortable and inviting. I don’t like a lot of stuff, but I do still lean toward a traditional/eclectic style with a lot of handmade touches. I love neutrals and washed-out colors.

We don’t have much money to spend on our house right now, but we plan to be here a long time so as long as we are making progress it will come together eventually. I am diving into crafts that will help decorate on a budget, and my husband and I have decided that we will try our hands at woodworking together. We will make it happen.

I got the idea from Manda to focus on one small corner/nook/area of the home at a time. Things are much more manageable that way. From here on out I will be giving you before photos, asking for advice, and updating with my progress as I slowly make our house into what I envision it to be.

And now, some inspiration photos! I love all of these and I hope you can get an idea of the style I’m going for from them.

    ***

It’s Monday, but it’s winding down. We didn’t have the greatest weekend, but it wasn’t horrible either. Just like…a lot of little annoying things happened and Meredith was fussy and needy the whole time and we were just “off” as a couple. But we made a pact last night to let it go and make this a fresh week and so far it’s going well.

Something hard happened at work today. I made a mistake, and it wasn’t really a big deal and certainly won’t cause any harm, but it was involving a patient and a medication and I’m still really mad at myself, embarrassed, and ashamed because it shouldn’t have happened. I could have easily just kept quiet but the right thing to do was to report it. I was so tempted to take the easy way out. No one would have known. I seriously considered it. But I didn’t do the easy thing. I submitted a report, and it didn’t feel good, but it’s done and now I can be a little less ashamed of myself. I am sure I will be hearing about it in the future but for now I’m doing my best to let it go.

I wish I could have a mentor in the area of feeding my family. Someone who is really good at budgeting, menu planning, and cooking (all this as a working mom) who will come take me under her wing and show me her ways until I am strong enough to fly free on my own. In return I will mentor her in…something. I don’t know what. But something! In the meantime I think I just need to buy this book and read it over and over.

Monday night thoughts. There you have ’em.

  • project life 2013 : week 13

This is from the week of March 25-31. It includes Easter and my day in the life record, so even though it only encompasses one week, it is very full. That’s how it goes!

    DSCF4188

    DSCF4191

On the left side I tried to include all the more routine parts of our week.

Then there is the day in the life insert. I really like this way of documenting this once-a-month project I’m doing, and I think I’ll keep it the same each time. I am using these page protectors which are perfect for iPhone photos, although they are smaller than 3×4 so I had to cut each photo down. Next time I will remember that and add a border to the photos before printing so I don’t cut off any part of it. The top left pocket will be for the date – that stamp was a special edition from Studio Calico – and I will probably change up the title label from time to time.

    DSCF4195

    Then it’s just photos.

    DSCF4196

If I need to fill up a spot I will do so with filler cards like this one at the end. I thought about adding journaling to the photos themselves, but instead I am choosing just to include my worksheet in full. It gives the best overview anyway and I think it will be fun to go back and read.

Now on to the right side of the spread. The top two thirds of it are all photos and journaling from Easter.

Then the bottom (along with a couple photos on the left page) is devoted to our trip to the antique festival.

    DSCF4200

This is a really blurry close up picture, but I wanted to show you what I did since I had sooo many vertical pictures this week and hardly any horizontal. For three of the 4×6 pockets I used washi tape to put together two photos that went with each other. It works, but is not my favorite thing to do so much because I think it looks busy. Oh well – I will work on taking more horizontal photos!
