    what i learned in october

I started strong with writing down what I learned in October, but it got kind of stressful toward the end and I didn’t end up remembering to keep up with it! So here are the few random things I learned over the past month.

    Pop culture trivia

Am I the last one to know this? Kirk Cameron and Candace Cameron Bure are siblings. I learned this from the Popcast.

    Fairy tales

Also from the Popcast, I learned some of the details about the dark origins of fairy tales. Suuuper creepy stuff.

    Random medical stuff

This is probably going to be a recurring category in my life because of my job. From working in the pre-op department this month, I learned that “talus” is an ankle bone and “cicatrix” means a scar.

    Dark matter

From an interview on the Happier podcast, I learned that there is such a thing as dark matter which is matter in the universe that doesn’t interact with light. So weird.

    Sororities

From my Voxer friends, I learned the history and origins of sororities and how they work. I went to a college that didn’t have them, so I really had no good idea what they are actually like.

    Gilmore Girls

Like the rest of the world, I learned that my all-time favorite show Gilmore Girls is coming back with four encore episodes via Netflix! I’m planning to take the day off work and binge-watch it whenever it actually does come out.

    Personal Growth

Several things were (are) causing me anxiety recently (still), and I re-learned that I’m a work in progress. I don’t recover from stressful situations well and I definitely take it out on the people around me without intending to. That’s not a fun thing to learn over and over again, but at least now I’m taking steps to better myself.

Stay tuned for the books I read in October, and a new blog series coming soon!

    halloween links

It’s Halloween weekend and I’m feeling kind of like these kiddos look – crazy & tired. :) So excited for the weekend though! Here are some links for your Friday.

For fall, I’m looking to invest in some black booties. I’d love to get these, but they would take me until NEXT fall to save up for. My second choice would be these, but that’s still probably too much for me right now. So instead I’m thinking something like these.

And speaking of ankle booties, I appreciated this post on how to wear them.

A seriously simple fall wreath DIY.

Have you heard of Madre Beads? They are playful and mama/baby friendly necklaces & bracelets, and I’m in love.

I’ve been using Chatbooks over the past several months to document the everyday, and they are having a 3-day sale! Enter code “TREAT” at checkout to see what discount you get. :)

Guide to candy trading made me LOL.

    Have a great one, friends!

    favorite scary books / kapachino

I’m not much of a scary book reader, but since it’s that time of year I figured I’d share my favorites all the same. I could only come up with four that would qualify, so as a bonus I turned to my husband David who loves this stuff. Here we go!

IT by Stephen King – David turned me on to Stephen King as a writer, and although I tend to stay away from his horror stuff, I did tackle IT and man was it good. Yeah there is some scary stuff in there, but you’d also be surprised to know that there is a beautiful coming-of-age story within it, as well as a lovely portrait of childhood friendship. (P.S. – David says the scariest Stephen King book is Pet Sematary.)

The Hot Zone by Richard Preston – This is the true story of a near Ebola outbreak in the U.S. After reading this, Ebola was my #1 fear for quite awhile, and it’s super scary how quickly it can spread. Too apt in light of recent events, as well.

Dracula by Bram Stoker – A classic for a reason, this is such a well-written, suspenseful story.

The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule – One of my favorite true crime books because the author, Ann Rule, was actually friends with serial killer Ted Bundy at the time of his killings and so had a unique insight into his psychopathy. This one freaked me out because of the way Bundy lured innocent women to him. It was definitely good for me to read as a friendly, trusting person.

The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty (David’s pick) He says: I knew the story and I had seen the movie, but it was still the scariest thing I’ve ever read and maybe even the best book I’ve ever read. It’s raw, and you feel so deeply how helpless the girl’s parents are as they try to figure out what’s going on with their daughter.

Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist – (David’s pick) He says: If you like vampire stuff at all, this is absolutely not cheesy. It’s set in Sweden which gives it an amazing atmosphere and you feel cold and actually scared.

Full disclosure: I started getting really creeped out when searching for these book covers, so I don’t know if I’ll ever read David’s suggestions. ;) But he really does have great taste if you like that kind of thing!

Do you read scary books? What are your favorites?

week in the life 2015 : thursday in the album / kapachino

I’m getting so close to finishing this project, over halfway through! I’ve been getting through a day each weekend lately so I should be done by Thanksgiving for sure. :)

week in the life 2015 : thursday in the album / kapachino

I like my albums to be cohesive so I pick a formula and stick with it. You’ll see the same things here as the other days.

The “today” stamp above is from last year’s week in the life kit. Again you’ll notice that I put some photos back to back outside the page protectors. The pair on top is centered around daycare dropoff, and the pair on the bottom is about my work day.

I’ve really liked including a lot of typed journaling on the photos, but I also like mixing it with handwriting. It works well, I think!

  • kitchen switch-ups with viva

Tracking PixelAre you a brand-loyal type of person? I think most people are for some things. Personally, I like to try a bunch of different products until I find what I consider the best, and then I stick to it. That’s how we landed on Viva® Towels ages ago. If you haven’t tried them, they are plain white and feel like cloth. The higher quality is immediately noticeable, and basically, we are in love.

When I was asked to attend a local event to learn more about the Viva® Vantage® towel (post sponsor!), I was totally game because I already knew it was a brand I love. Even though we try not to use too many paper towels in favor of cloth napkins and dishrags, there are some things they are just better for.

It was so fun to meet some local bloggers at this event! Our host Kristi had a beautiful spread of snacks for us. We spent awhile chatting and taking pics and then she demonstrated a few tips for making the best of the Viva® Vantage® style towels, which were a 2015 product of the year.

    Some ideas:

    1. Place a damp paper towel under wooden cutting boards to keep them in place
    2. Use instead of a colander to rinse and scrub fruits & veggies – its stretchy strength means it won’t break
    3. Keep your flowers fresher by wrapping a wet paper towel around the stems
    4. Polish glasses, clean mirrors – anything you want to shine
    5. Get grime off your stove using the great scrubbing power of the V-Flex Weave™

After the difficult business of socializing and product testing, it was definitely snack time. Mmm.

What other kitchen switches have you made lately? Inspired by this, I’ve decided to try out a few more that are cheap and easy. Some are for function, and some are just making me happy. Here’s what I’m going to try:

    1. Buy fancy dish soap once, then reuse the pretty bottle.
    2. Add plants to the windowsill and top of the fridge.
    3. Photo magnets. So much neater than all the paper photos I have up there now.
    4. Use a silverware caddy. It will look nice on the counter, be functional, and free up a drawer for kids’ plates and bowls.
    5. Hang a whiteboard for meal planning. I do the meal plan but need to have it in front of my face in the kitchen so I don’t forget to prep ingredients!

I’d love to hear about some of your kitchen switches, and let me know if you decide to try out the great scrubbing power of Viva® Vantage®!
