The End Of The Summer

September 22, 2009

I’m gathering that most people are ready for summer to end. It’s been a hot one, it’s true. People are ready for cooler weather, sweaters and boots, school supplies, football, the leaves changing colors, the smell of autumn in the air, holidays, new TV shows, and the colors of fall.

Some of those things have already arrived, but today autumn officially begins.

I’m enjoying most of the things that come along with the new season, but I can’t help but mourn the passing of summer. It’s my favorite season. To me it’s nostalgia, warm nights, tank tops and sandals, barbecues, swimming, bright colors, road trips, fresh fruit, romance, fishing in the ocean with my husband, and everything green.

This song by Dar Williams haunts me at this time of year, and I want to share it with you.

Listen to that and tell me that you’re not a little bit sad about summer ending.

Summer ends and we wonder who we are…

    Very haunting song! Love it!

The end of seasons is more of an introspective time than the end of the year for me.

    From DeMo:

I’ve never heard that song before.

It is sad to have to let go of the warm nights, but I’m also looking forward to the pumpkins and campfires.

It should be considered cheating to use a song like that to make a point.

    From Carrie:

I have to admit I loved summer until I moved to Texas – now I count down to the fall every year.

I’ll send you an email in the next couple of days about places to go in San Antonio. Any idea what part of town you all might be staying in? Down on the River Walk?

I’m just now getting to reading your blog and listening to this song by Dar Williams — I love it! So very hauntingly beautiful. I love Summer too and as others have said, Football is the thing I most look forward to in Fall. Summer is over but at least we have football. :>) Love you, Marchar

This song is beautiful! I always have a hard time letting go of summer. But something shifts in me once fall really hits, and I get super excited. It’s hard to explain!
