my first embroidered card

March 25, 2012

I’ve been making my own cards for years, but I was only recently introduced to the concept of embroidering paper. Now a whole new world has opened up for me! This is the first one I made: I wanted to keep it simple and just feature the embroidery since this was my first try. I got the pattern for the smiling cake from the stitchalong at Feeling Stitchy. I just printed it out, placed it on top of the cardstock, then poked holes with a thumbtack where I wanted to stitch. I widened the holes with my needle from front to back, then did a back stitch. I was worried about the French knots because I was afraid the holes…

introducing project life & 2012 weeks 1 – 6

March 15, 2012

I started Project Life on my birthday at the beginning of February. It’s a scrapbooking system that can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be. It uses a 3-ring binder, photo protector pages, your photos, and journaling cards. There are special Project Life kits and supplies that you can buy, or you can just recreate it on your own. I really love it. I’ve never kept up with a scrapbook before, but this seems sustainable. It’s been five weeks and I’m going strong. I do one spread (two 12 x 12 pages) per week, and I usually put it all together on the weekends in about two sittings. Here’s the front page (click on the…

Documenting Life

January 9, 2012

I know I said I don’t have new year’s resolutions this year, but I’m still trying to slowly make changes (as I can handle them, and as the ideas gel in my mind). With Meredith’s arrival my nostalgia has increased tenfold, and my urge to document life has grown exponentially. I know my blogging has suffered lately (I’m working on it), but I’ve also been experimenting with other forms of record-keeping. Tumblr I created a site dedicated only to Meredith, and for now it is password-protected because it makes us a little bit nervous to have her out there like that. I try to update it every day with a picture or at least a sentence or two. I think…

When I Feel Like Creating

August 28, 2010

I feel like I’ve been in some sort of trance this week, on autopilot. The days have just been lulling by, and I haven’t done much besides work, eat, sleep, watch TV, and read. Yesterday I got let off work early, so I came home with an entire evening to do whatever I wanted since I hadn’t planned on being there. I thought about cleaning, or starting on a project around the house, but in the end my exhaustion won me over again and David and I collapsed on the couch with Chinese food. Even though I haven’t done much about it, for the past few days I’ve felt the urge to create. This is not to be confused with…

Friday Things: Making Me Happy

August 20, 2010

My all-time favorite book is The Lord of the Rings, and it’s been a deep sadness of mine that David doesn’t share my love. He’s never shown any interest in reading the book, and according to him he “suffered” through the first movie when it came out in the theater. But it’s been a month since he’s had to be home from work, and he recently got it into his head that he’d watch the top 50 movies from imdb.com. Guess what? All three of the LOTR movies are on there. And since I already own them, he started watching them at home all by himself. I was so proud! The best part is, he actually likes them now. He…
