  • halloween costume plans & free portraits

This post is sponsored by Portrait Innovations because I think this event is really cool and want to share!

So, have you got your kids’ Halloween costumes figured out yet? I usually wait until the last minute just because Halloween is not a big deal to me. Sometimes it pays off (once I found an awesome costume for Meredith at Old Navy the day before for only a few bucks) but as with most things it’s much easier to plan ahead. (Especially when you’re like me and hate to pay real cash money for them.)

    Last year’s costumes

Meredith is finally at the age where she has pretty strong opinions about what she wants to dress up as. First, she wanted to be Ariel. She stuck with that for a couple of weeks and I was begrudgingly going to order it. But then she found out her friends at school are going to be Elsa, and suddenly she wanted to be Elsa too. Only…she wanted to be Ariel AND Elsa. At the same time. I wasn’t sure how I was going to make that work.

THEN we visited her friend Jack who has a really cool firefighter costume that they played with, and I totally jumped all over that and I suggested she be a firefighter instead, and to my great pleasure she said yes! Even better, her cousin owns the costume already. We are still figuring out the finished products but here is the general idea:

This year I’m glad to have our costumes figured out early because there is a cool event going on offering free pictures from Portrait Innovations! I’m sure they could give us a better finished product than what I’ve gotten so far. ;) Check out their invitation:

Hello hello! We’ve been staying busy, and here are a few things that we’ve been up to:

    • Got a new car (last photo). David’s truck was past the point of saving so we bit the bullet and went to Carmax and came home with a 2014 Mazda5. He is letting me drive it, so I’m trying not to think about the car payment and just enjoying having a new car. I do really love it, even if it is approaching minivan territory.
    • Started weekly Financial Peace University classes (Dave Ramsey). Bad timing to take on new debt but since there was no other option we are just focusing on making progress from here on out!
    • My work is still inconsistent and unpredictable, so I’ve done some commuting to the medical center and working in other units.
    • Dealing with difficult bedtime & sleeping situations with the kids. There is always some sort of struggle and either one or both of us ends up sleeping badly.
    • I’ve been having a ton of fun with the new adventure of It Works. Love the products, love the company, love that there is real earning potential to help my family. AND I already got to reconnect with my friend Chelsea, not to mention meet some other awesome girls. Hoping to share more about this in a full post soon!
    • No crafting at ALL . Just no time. Maybe this coming weekend!
    • Reading way too many books at one time and can’t seem to finish anything.
    • The normal shenanigans – jumping on the bed, eating the “smelly” markers, visiting the cousins, tea parties, and more. David attempted to carve a pumpkin with Meredith and you can see the result above. He really tried, and all I could say was, “Bless your heart.” Couldn’t stop smiling. :)

Around here it still feels like summer and I haven’t made any plans for my kids’ Halloween costumes. How about you??

  • what i learned in september

    what i learned in sept

Today I’m linking up with Emily Freeman to share the random things I learned over the past month. It’s been fun to write down these tidbits and I think I’ll keep it up!

    Car inspection info

I had to get my car inspected this month, but it needed some work done first. So I learned that they won’t pass you if the “check engine” light is on, and you can’t have a spare tire on.

I also always forget that you have to show proof of insurance to pass inspection, and I didn’t have a hard copy. But I learned that they will accept a digital copy if you just look it up on your phone and show them. So yay!

    Tubal ligation reversals

I work with a gynecologic oncologist, and his nurse was telling me all about patients she’s had who have had their tubal ligations reversed. (A tubal ligation is having your “tubes tied.”) First of all, I didn’t even know it was possible to have that reversed. And secondly, I learned a lot about why someone would want to have that reversed apart from regret. She told me stories about women who had been sterilized unknowingly and without consent due to race or poverty.

    Aging and end of life

Like I mentioned in my reading recap, I read the book Being Mortal and I learned a TON about the aging process and options in America for handling old age and end of life. I think the most important thing I took away from the book were the questions you should ask when presented with a difficult decision regarding treatment of a severe or terminal illness.

    1. What is your understanding of your condition and its possible outcomes?
    2. What are your hopes or goals?
    3. What are you fears?
    4. What outcomes are unacceptable to you? What would you be willing to sacrifice and not?
    5. What would a good day look like?

    Monster energy drink symbolism

So, my husband is into conspiracy theories. Apparently this isn’t a new one, but of course I had never heard of it before. Apparently the M in Monster looks like three Hebrew number vavs put together, which is 666. Their slogan is “unleash the beast,” and there is a cross in the letter O which gets inverted when you drink it. Okay, I’m not saying the drink is Satanic but it’s pretty interesting!

    Interventional radiology

This month I trained in the interventional radiology department at our hospital, where they do minor procedures. So I learned how they prep patients, what all types of procedures they do, and the flow of the clinic.

Berenstain Bears & the Mandela Effect

This is another conspiracy I learned about from my husband. Apparently, so many people remember these beloved books being spelled with an E, BerenstEin Bears, that they are convinced there is an alternate reality or a glitch in the matrix. The Mandela Effect is when a large number of people have the same false memory, as in when Nelson Mandela died, many people were convinced that he had already died in prison.

    Random medical stuff

I learned that the blood pressure medication Cozaar can be given for Reynaud’s Syndrome. I learned what patients with insulin pumps should do when they are having surgery, since they can’t eat or drink. Usually, patients are instructed not to take insulin at all. But in the case of a pump, they are to check with their endocrinologist who may ask them to leave it on up until a certain point.

    French bulldogs

This breed of dog, while super adorable, actually would not exist on its own. They cannot breed naturally because the male’s hips are too narrow to mount the female. I learned this because the wife of our new doctor at work is a vet, and he was talking about her preferences in animal breeds.

    Hormones

One big thing I learned about myself is that it appears my natural cycle of hormones are coming back and are very much going to affect me in an emotional way, and not a good one. I also saw my OB/GYN and she explained to me that while nursing, estrogen is low and progesterone is high and what changes that produces in the body.

Last week was not a good one.

I have many stressors in my life right now: not sleeping well, Meredith having anxiety, Liam teething, finances in bad shape, work unpredictable, not to mention the general craziness of being a working mom to little kids.

But last week I was not handling anything well. I forgot completely about self-care and let my grumpiness come out in full force each evening at home. By the end of it I was wondering if it was time for me to consider therapy.

And then I realized: HORMONES. Yup, my body was going through some stuff (ahem) and hormones are changing and I don’t think it was a coincidence.

ANYWAY. We ended up having a great weekend, lots of quality time with the kids and no one had a meltdown, including me! I even made a lot of progress with my Week in the Life album, got to see a friend, and David and I had a date. We’ve been doing at-home dates to save money, and right now we’re watching The Good Wife. He makes fun of it, but I love it.

This week David has to work late every day, but I am focusing on self-care. I even went so far as to make myself a checklist, because that kind of thing helps me. If you think you need a little guidance in that area and you want to use mine, feel free to check it out. Just save your own copy and edit!
