  • Typical

My dad lost his driver’s license a couple days ago. He figured he just left it in one of the schools that he travels to for work, but then he got it back in the mail. Included in the envelope was a small Bible tract and flyer for a church. It was in Spanish, and the woman who mailed it had written her name and phone number at the top.

My mom asked my dad to call and thank her. I asked why my mom didn’t call since she can speak Spanish and he can’t. He said, “That’s what I said, but she said I have to try myself first.” I smiled at that. “We’re just an old married couple, Kat,” and then he complied with my mother’s wishes.

When the phone was answered my dad asked to speak to the woman who did the mailing. When no one on the other end could understand him, he got out a feeble, “habla ingles?” and then handed the phone to my mom, who went on to have at least a five minute animated conversation with the woman. My dad, from across the room, shook his head. He said, “I would have just said thank you and goodbye!”

I take after my dad on this one, but that’s not to say that sometimes I don’t wish I was more like my mom. She’s the friendliest person I’ve ever met in my life!

  • Late – Early – Late

This morning my alarm went off at 4 a.m. and I pushed snooze until 4:45 a.m., apparently. That’s a lot considering my snooze only lasts 4 minutes. I usually don’t do that, but I guess I was especially tired. Anyway, I got up in a rush because I have to leave by 5:10 a.m. to catch the bus, and I still had to shower. I was all of a sudden filled with energy.

But then when I was in the shower I realized that I have class today, so I didn’t have to be at work until 8 a.m. Immediately I was overwhelmed with sleepiness. I went from being late to being extremely early. So I took my time getting ready, browsed the internet and finished reading a book. I caught the bus a little early.

Then when I was on the bus I realized that the class time had gotten moved to 7 a.m. Shoot. Luckily, the teacher was running late too.

  • Four Things

#1: I just painted my toenails a dark shade of purple. I am in a wedding this weekend and the bridesmaid dress is purple, and I do not want my hideous toenail bruises showing. However, it is the worst toenail paint job ever, and I’m wondering if the bruises might not be more attractive.

#2: I am devastated because Bennigan’s has filed for bankruptcy and soon will be closed down forever. This was one of my favorite stand-by restaurants. I always knew I could go there for a good meal (the baked potato soup and 1/2 county cork sandwich with a brownie bottom pie for dessert was my favorite). Never again. Tear.

#3: A good friend of our family’s and a member of our church who has always enjoyed photography is now becoming more serious about it, and thus set up a website. He particularly enjoys action shots, and came out to one of my Saturday morning soccer games the other week and took a bunch of pictures. Go HERE to see them. They are really good, except for my hideous face which is a mixture of concentration, exhaustion, and heat stroke.

#4: I am headed out of town to Kansas tomorrow straight after work for the previously mentioned wedding. I am toting David along with me. It is going to be a crazy fast trip, but memories will be made, I will see some of my best friends, and David and I will be together more than we have in the last week combined. And it will be good to get away, if only for a bit. See you when I get back!

  • Looking Forward

It’s good to have things to look forward to. For example: the weekend, seeing friends from out of town, a good vacation, heaven, blah blah blah. I think that one of the main reasons that I can usually stay so positive is because I always find something to look forward to, whether it’s little or big. People who have a hard time with this sometimes start negative habits just because it gives them something to look forward to.

I was thinking about this concept this morning as I dragged myself out of bed. There are certain things that make it a little bit easier on me to wake up at 4 a.m. For example, when my alarm goes off I look forward to a shower and eating breakfast. When I leave, I look forward to the nap I will get to take on the long bus ride to work. After I arrive at the hospital (20 minutes early every day), I look forward to the nap I will get to take sitting in a chair in the lobby. When it’s time to head up to the unit, I look forward to a cup of coffee. And if I can get that far, I can usually make it!

This post could become an essay on the power of hope, except that right now I am very much looking forward to going to sleep, and that is much more powerful than anything else at the moment. So, what are you currently looking forward to?

  • Me and My Aunt

This is me with my Aunt Rodda, my mom’s younger sister, at a baby shower she threw for my cousin’s wife over the weekend. She hates having her picture taken and I don’t understand it because I think she’s so pretty!
