Snapshots of the Weekend

April 26, 2009

Me: So tell me about the NFL draft, I need to know this now! David: (Blah blah Texans blah blah Cushing blah blah defensive end etc. etc. etc.) Me: Hmm. You’re lucky that I already have a working knowledge of football. David: Okay, what’s a cornerback? Me: They are the people that mark the receivers. David: Um, first of all, there is no “marking” in football. Me: But isn’t that what they do? They cover the receivers? David: Yes, but it’s not called “marking.” I played and watched sports for 27 years and I never heard the word “mark” until I went to one of your indoor soccer games. Me: Huh. *** Barry (little bro): So there was chocolate fondue…

I Need Painting Advice!

April 24, 2009

Since I first laid eyes on our house, I loved it but I knew there were a few things we’d want to change to make it our own. One major thing is that the living room and breakfast room have wood paneling that make the space seem a lot darker than it is, especially since it matches the wood floors. I like THAT it is wood instead of drywall, because I think that once we paint over it the wood will add a lot of character. But the painting is the part I’m stuck at. I chalk this change up to two things: 1) I live with David now, and one of his favorite things is giving dogs…

shoo fly

April 22, 2009

The other day there was a fly buzzing around in our bathroom. My first reaction was to be annoyed and swat at it, but then I remembered the scene in The Hiding Place where Corrie is locked up in solitary confinement for weeks and comes to regard the ants in the cell as her friends. She was just grateful to have a living being nearby, no matter how diminuitive. So I started to think of the fly as my companion, and it made me less annoyed. Today, I saw the fly’s smushed body on the bathroom floor. I was sad. Just a few days ago he was happily buzzing around. When I told David this story he admitted to me…

April 21, 2009

I long to accomplish a great and noble tasks, but it is my chief duty to accomplish humble tasks as though they were great and noble. The world is moved along, not only by the mighty shoves of its heroes, but also by the aggregate of the tiny pushes of each honest worker.” ~Helen Keller Here is my list of 101 goals in 1001 days.
